Readings for kids?

My DS (12) is reading at our wedding in a couple of months. I'd love to hear some decent examples - non cheesy or cutesy, and non religious. I like the passage from a Velveteen Rabbit and also the Pooh & Piglet extract about always being together. DP is not his dad but we've been together since he was 2, plus we have a DD together so something touching on a blended family would be nice - I just can't find anything!

I found this poem on here not too long ago and changed the words slightly to suit our situation, we have 2 DC together aged 3 & 5. DH-to-be's god daughter is going to do this reading for us (she'll be 9). You may be able to change wording to what suits. Also we recently went to a blended family wedding and the brides daughter did a little speech after the best man's, it was very short and I can't remember what she actually said but there wasn't a dry eye in the room (& only the best man knew she was going to do it).

Bride name & Groom name get married today
I'd like to help them on their way.
So here's some special advice from me
To help them out as a family.

Keep your house filled with laughter
And have lots of fun forever after.

Keep the drawer filled up with treats
And give the kids lots of sweets.
Make sure that you spend time together
To enjoy being the Xyz family forever.

But the most important thing for you
Is to show your love in all you do.
A caring word, a kiss, a touch
And family cuddles that mean so much.

I recently did a reading for a good friend's wedding and it was Union by Robert Fulham. Not sure if a 12yo would be suited to read it but it is lovely. Trying to find a link for you.

A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton. It's beautiful and it's about dinosaurs Grin we had it at our wedding and it went down so well :)

Ooh was just about to say 'lovely love story'! My 10 year old DS read it at my brother's wedding recently. It's really lovely and raised a more than a few smiles with everyone.

A LOVELY LOVE STORY BY EDWARD MONKTON

The fierce Dinosaur was trapped inside his cage of ice. Although it was cold he was happy in there. It was, after all, HIS cage.

Then along came the Lovely Other Dinosaur.

The Lovely Other Dinosaur melted the Dinosaur’s cage with kind words and loving thoughts.

I like this Dinosaur, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur. Although he is fierce he is also tender and he is funny. He is also quite clever though I will not tell him this for now.

I like this Lovely Other Dinosaur, thought the Dinosaur. She is beautiful and she is different and she smells so nice. She is also a free spirit, which is a quality I much admire in a dinosaur.

But he can be so distant and so peculiar at times, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur.

He is also overly fond of Things. Are all Dinosaurs so overly fond of Things?

But her mind skips from here to there so quickly, thought the Dinosaur. She is also uncommonly keen on Shopping. Are all Lovely Other Dinosaurs so uncommonly keen on shopping?

I will forgive his peculiarity and his concern for Things, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur. For they are part of what makes him a richly charactered individual.

I will forgive her skipping mind and her fondness for shopping, thought the Dinosaur. For she fills our life with beautiful thought and wonderful surprises. Besides, I am not unkeen on shopping either.

Now the Dinosaur and the Lovely Other Dinosaur are old. Look at them.

Together they stand on the hill telling each other stories and feeling the warmth of the sun on their backs.

And that, my friends, is how it is with love. Let us all be Dinosaurs and Lovely Other Dinosaurs together.

For the sun is warm. And the world is a beautiful place…

my daughter 7 wrote a poem, idea borrowed from internet. Things that go together.

Dog and cat, head and hat etc.
Some silly things-
you and me, pooh and wee,
some meaningful to us-
lips and kiss, Sarah and Chris.
Some involving grandparents and
guests. It was personal, not too long and really sweet. She is only 7 though. May not be very sophisticated for an older child!
