My partner has recently been diagnosed with cancer and while expected to respond well to treatment it has made us realise we want to get married. We have decided to try and get it done in the next 6 - 8 weeks before he starts treatment which will leave him unwell for quite some time.

Is it doable? We just want a registry office ceremony with 2 witnesses and our dd and then a party afterwards with our family and friends. Our budget is 1000 - 1500 which isn't a lot but with an uncertain future we don't want to get into debt.

I would really appreciate any tips and advice anyone is willing to share!?

Thank you all for your advice and help.

We had good news from the registry office they had the date we most wanted so that has been booked. Now we know times I have contacted halls etc.

PartyCity - thank you for the dress shop link it looks perfect and not too far from me so will be going to have a look.

Mooey what a kind offer thank you so much it is a beautiful style dress. I have not worn a dress in over 7 years so have no idea what style would suit me so need to go get some expert advice.

Cat - thank you for the advice I have ordered some samples off ebay, hopefully we will have a venue before they arrive so I can order straight away.

I have put out a request for jam jars and ordered the bridesmaid dress off ebay which has decided the colour scheme for us. Sorry if I've missed anyone I am truly grateful for all the advice x

Can I suggest that it may be worth asking for people to bring pot luck buffet supper instead of gifts???

Some of the best weddings I've been to have been like this.

I did my wedding shirt notice too, a few more weeks than you I think. I got my dress at a second hand place- meant I could buy it there and then and just have it altered to fit perfectly. Are there any near you?

Good luck. Remember the registry office is the only essential part. Everything else is lovely, but so t get too bogged down in it. That is the great thing about a fast wedding- less time to stress and overthink things.

So just to update. We have the ceremony booked, we have booked the hall for the reception who are also going to do the catering and will also decorate the hall for me. I can either give them a budget and they will buy the stuff of I can provide and they will set out.

I have a dress! I went to wed2b a's a poster suggested above. Mooey thank you again for your lovely offer I tried similar styles on today and they just did not suit me. I'm extremely grateful for the amazingly kind offer!

A friend has offered to come help me get ready the morning of the wedding and do makeup which I had not even thought of.

Am I forgetting anything? My only regret is my mum has kicked off because we don't want anyone but our children at the ceremony and now doesn't want anything to do with the wedding. She's refusing to attend at the moment. We have discussed her coming but it would mean one of our children couldn't as the ceremony room only holds 5.

Would you like flowers/photographer/cake? I know your friend is doing your make up but what about hair?

Outfits for groom and children. Wedding rings too if your having them.

HopeSpringsEternal2017 · 11/06/2017 21:28

Groom was best man last year so has a lovely suit that's only been worn once so a new tie and he's done. The kids are the same.

Cake as suggested above I'm going to get an m&'s cake and decorate it with decorations bought off ebay.

We have discussed photographer but seems a lot of money. All family have camera phones and the DJ takes pictures of the party??

Hair we have someone who comes to the house so I will book her for the weekend but will go to the salon on the morning of the wedding for just a wash and set.

Rings because I have chubby man fingers we are thinking about going to Hatton garden to get one custom made - apparently chea per than trying to increase the band of another ring

We were engaged for 3 months. We set the date, then had 2 weeks to organise the lot.
The first thing is set the date so you know it's definite. Then organise somewhere for a reception. Next invites. After that it's just a matter of finding the best places to get what you need locally.
We had no problems at all.

M&S do wedding flower bundles if you want flowers - bouquet, button hole etc.

NolongerAnxiousCarer · 11/06/2017 21:42

We got cobalt rings online, which look just like white gold, but are more hard wearing and much cheaper, I have big fingers too.

For me the photographer was the thing I spent most of the budget on as that the memories you can look back at forever, but I know it's not eveyones priority.
