Guest, faux pas?

My cousin is getting married next month and I am a guest for the ceremony, breakfast and reception.

I bought a dress to wear, it is floor length and described as a bridesmaid dress but is absolutely nothing like her chosen bridesmaid dresses and is a completely different colour. (Her colour scheme is red and my dress is lavender).

Another cousin who is also attending has apparently turned her nose up a bit when my aunt chatted to her about dresses and described mine. She supposedly sneered and said "well she isn't a bridesmaid so why has she bought that".

Returning it isn't an option as I have had it altered and it is way past 28 days return anyway. And besides I love the dress and would wear it again to similar events.

I guess I never thought much of the 'bridesmaid' description because it isn't the actual bridesmaid dress for the wedding!

Have I made a faux pas?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with what you have bought. Have a lovely time at the wedding and don't worry about small minded trouble causes.

Unless that's actually the same color as the bridesmaids are wearing I can't see why that dress would be a problem.

As long as you don't intend to carry a bouquet and follow the bride you'll be fine! Its a lovely dress for a guest. I'm not aware of a rule saying a guest can't wear gorgeous maxi length purpley dresses.

My post baby body is still a work in progress, it wasn't easy to find a dress I felt nice in so it made me feel a bit shit!

I certainly wouldn't look at that and think bridesmaid. I think lots of sites market their frocks as bridesmaid nowadays, as fewer people choose the satin monstrosities that were prevalent in the not too distant past. If you do a search under bridesmaid dresses, most look like cocktail dresses. It's a lovely dress and I'm sure you'll look fab.

That is a lovely dress and would only be a bridesmaid dress if that was actually what her bridesmaids were wearing! If they are wearing red strapless then you are fine with your dress.

Ha ha imagine the cousins face if I arrived with a bouquet

TBH I think she has a chip on her shoulder because she was the only cousin asked to be bridesmaid but never mind!! It isn't the first pop she has had at people.

The dress is lovely, I would add that I had a guest wear a bridesmaid dress at my wedding. I didn't give it a second thought, however she was treated as a bridesmaid by the owners of my venue and they would often refer to her about decisions on the day. This annoyed her massively😞

With red being a bold colour it should be clear who the bridesmaids are so hopefully nobody will be pestering me about table arrangements etc

I wouldn't look at that and say "bridesmaid" unless there were 3 of you wearing the same one. It's a lovely dress, and perfect for a wedding guest.

Love that dress if a guest wore it to my wedding I would think they looked lovely. I like wearing floor length dresses to weddings.
