Wedding ring, left or right hand

SystemAticcally · 10/08/2016 16:54

I'm not sure where to ask this but here it goes.

I am under the impression that putting a wedding ring on the left hand is for Catholics while on the right is for Protestants.

Is this correct?

Wtf? Left! Everyone!

PotteringAlong · 10/08/2016 16:56

No! Left for everyone.

coughingbean · 10/08/2016 16:57

Left for everyone.

Although now I am doubting myself.

Nope, definitely left for all.

SweetChickadee · 10/08/2016 16:58

Left in Britain. Some Europeans put it on the right

Globetrotter100 · 10/08/2016 16:58

I was told something like this when lived in the Netherlands...is it maybe a Dutch thing?

strawberrypenguin · 10/08/2016 16:59

Always left

Primaryteach87 · 10/08/2016 17:01

Left definitely in UK but have seen in London (on the tube because I'm nosey!) some people with rings on their right hand. I assume they are from another country where right is the norm?

LemonRedwood · 10/08/2016 17:01

Catholic mother, protestant father, both wore rings on the left.

I know in Brazil it is common for the wedding ring to be worn on the right hand during the engagement and it is then transferred to the left upon marriage (for both sexes).

anonymice · 10/08/2016 17:02

Right in Germany and Poland...

NuggetofPurestGreen · 10/08/2016 17:03

I know a Polish couple that wear them on the right. Otherwise everyone else I know is left.

wobblywonderwoman · 10/08/2016 17:03

Left in UK

Right in other countries

notarehearsal · 10/08/2016 17:09

Odd now I look back on it or maybe I was being a trend setter and didnt know it.
I obviously wore my wedding ring on my left hand. However when we separated I took to wearing it on my right hand. When we divorced I removed it

MrsJoeyMaynard · 10/08/2016 17:10

In the UK, it's normal for everyone to wear the wedding ring on the left hand.

TwistNshout · 10/08/2016 17:11

Left

SystemAticcally · 10/08/2016 17:11

Yes, that's what I keep seeing a few times a week hence my question.

OP Wikipedia has a hefty paragraph devoted to this very question.

In some Catholic and some Orthodox countries[5] such as Austria, Bulgaria, Colombia, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India (mostly for men), Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands [if not Catholic], Norway, Perú, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Ukraine, and Venezuela the wedding ring is worn on the ring finger of the right hand.

MiddleClassProblem · 10/08/2016 17:17

I come from a family that don't wear them just to confuse things!

LunaLoveg00d · 10/08/2016 17:20

I'm an atheist and wear it on my left hand.

FuturesAChanging · 10/08/2016 17:22

Left hand UK, right hand Germany and other countries. Have a friend that got engaged in uk, wears engagement ring on left hand, married in Germany wears wedding ring on right

toadgirl · 10/08/2016 19:35

Add this to your meal, AGL

^ Sorry I'm an idiot - wrong thread. As you were!

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2016 19:51

I didn't know anybody wore their wedding ring on their right hand...I have one on both - almost identical rings (long story). But I'm in the UK and thought everybody wore their wedding ring on their left hand.

EssentialHummus · 10/08/2016 19:57

Russian DP wears his on the right.

Thundercake · 10/08/2016 19:58

Right, but only coz i haven't told my family that I got married in January! Must put that on the to do list.
