My partner is always calling me his wife etc. However he never wants to get married, he is shy and doesn't like the big crowds he thinks will be turning up. (we don't know that many people ) how can I persuade him that weddings don't have to be a mega bug occasion

Tell him that you can go to a registry office with two witnesses off the street and get it done

Then have a party at a later date if you so wish

My partner had similar worries: we are getting married next
May after 15yrs together and 3 kids! Funnily enough he has no problem presenting conferences and the like! In the end I said that the legal security of marriage was essential for my peace of mind and that I found his reluctance upsetting. He just didn't think it was a big deal. Ironically he is now really excited and we are planning things to suit us both. He really didn't want to make a traditional speech so we have agreed to do a joint speech (which fits better with my feminist principles). I think your dp needs to consider what he is excluding you from by not marrying. You can have a really small do if necessary.
