Hiring a dress?

Has anyone hired their wedding dress?
I'm less than convinced I need to buy a dress for just one day, what on earth am I going to do with it after?!
If you hire one are they adjusted to fit you?

I couldn't find a hire shop near me but did find a lovely dress for £99 in Oxfam! Gave it back to them afterwards, tho I know someone who had their wedding dress dyed to use as an evening dress.
