Dress fitting alone

So, I am getting married in 10 weeks.

I need to get my dress fitted properly, but my dressmaker only does weekday appointments.

This means I have to go on my own. Normally I am a very independent person, but this is getting to me. I think because I feel quite unsupported in the whole wedding thing anyway (except DFiance) so I think this is just a symbol of that.

Did anyone else go alone? Can someone hand me a grip if I am being ridiculous?

I chose my dress with friends but went to all my fittings alone - it never occurred to me to invite anyone else to go to a fitting.

I went alone and it was great, you don’t have to worry about anyone elses opinion.

I went alone. The ladies there made me feel quite special though. They know to say the right things.

Would a friend take a day off or do you not have anyone that special? I didn't have anyone that fitted the bill and it did make me rather sad.

I went to all mine on my own too, didn't see a problem with it. I had my mum and sister there to help choose the dress though.

I went alone, in my lunchbreak. The fitting isn't all that exciting, honestly - just some tape-measuring.

I know what you mean about feeling supported overall though, and how important that is. Do you have a bridesmaid?

I was my sisters chief Bridesmaid. I went to all her fittings etc... and it was pointless... Fair enough she wanted my opinion on which dress before she chose etc - but afterwards for the fittings it was pretty much just her and the seamstress nattering and me sitting browsing through dress books.

I'm getting married this year (If I actually start planning something...) and I'll be happy to do the fittings solo as I know its fine.

Are there other problems with your bridal party / family?

Glad to know other people have been on their own.

I have 3 bridesmaids, my youngest sister and 2 good friends. We all live very far apart though, I see my sister at family events and my friends 2-3 times a year.

My sister is organising the hen night on her own.

My friends have contributed small things, and I appreciate it.

I think it is mostly as I actually did a lot of the dress shopping on my own. The one I picked, was on the only day anyone else came with me, and I think I only picked it because of that, rather than it being the one, IYSWIM?

We had a long engagement, and all the things people offered to do seem to have fallen by the wayside, leaving me and DF trying to see what our to do list actually is.

I think the big thing is people are big on opinions on what we should be doing, but not be very forthcoming about any help to do that.

Thanks for all the kind words though, I think you are right and it will be better to have no one, than people there under sufferance or making unhelpful comments

I will be going alone when I finally book it, I also picked the dress on my own but made an appointment so my mum would be there for final decision.

I had a bloody gaggle at mine and it was totally pointless, wish I'd gone alone!

Kind of wish I had had someone with me though - I had out on weight through comfort eating following a bereavement and boy was that dress fitter a bitch about it! As long as you're not getting it from a shop on the Headrow in Leeds , you should be fine Grin

I have been visiting bridal shops and trying on dresses alone recently. I have NOT told anyone this as it would induce a lot of hurt/anger/drama from my mum, sisters and best friend who all can't wait to do the girly search-for-a-dress.

The assistants look at me with a mix of pity and alarm, like i'm some sort of loon they need to be careful of. I'm assuming because there's usually always someone with the bride and they're not used to being asked to assist in doing up the back of the dress by a solo bride.

I don't care. I DETEST shopping with other people. I don't like or want other people's opinions (this makes me sound so arrogant, but i'm really not). I always find that other people either convince me to buy something i'm not that fussed on or really put me off something I love. I want my dress to be MY choice and I trust my judgement well enough that i'm not afraid i'll get something awful.

I intend to do a 'pretend' dress shop with my nearest and dearest while I play dress up for them and grit my teeth...then take some time to decide. THEN i'm going to invent a 'last minute sale' where I just rush out and happen upon a wonderful dress with no time to tell anyone and produce it with a flourish Smile.

I went dress shopping with my bridesmaids once and my mum on another occasion, but was on my own when I actually found my dress and then for all the fittings. I don't live near to any of them and was working odd shifts, so it would have been a logistical nightmare to try to get people together!

You will be fine, you know you love the dress already so the fitting is really just to make sure all the little bits are perfect.

Trouble is I don't love the dress

And it doesn't fit properly over the boobs.

Too late to change dress, but I don't want to fall out of it!
