When to send wedding invitations??

Wedding is 1st June, when is normal to send out the invitations? A lot of friends and family will be booking the day off work so think its only fair to give them quite a bit of notice (we never bothered with save the date cards). But also don't want to send them too early and have people lose them/forget! X

I think it's 6 weeks before for the invites.

Send some save the date cards now if you want to. They can be done cheaply. I saw a fab idea when planning mine - magnetic save the dates for the fridge

I think 6 weeks is traditional but I sent them 3 months. However, everyone we were inviting knew the date in advance. I sent a save the date e-mail well in advance so people could book hotels.

I don't understand 'save the date' stuff. Just send the invitations!

We are sending them 6 weeks before but all our guests will know the date anyway.

I generally think sending them out before you get married is a good idea

I thought they should go out earlier but no matter who I ask Im told 6 weeks.

Thanks for all the replies! We only sent save the date cards to people that live abroad or would have to travel a long distance to be at the wedding. Sending them to everyone just seemed like one more expense/ job to do that could b avoided!
6 weeks seems a bit close to the date, think I would be stressing about people rsvping in time so think ill send them a bit early. March perhaps?

I have just checked in my book (is quite a few years old though) and it says 6-9 months. I would do it asap unless you aren't fussed if certain people can't make it. In which case, why invite them.

I would say 2-3months, it gives guests time to sort out outfits, baby sitters etc.... So if yours is june then march /april.

I think people normally send further ahead esp if you need a day off - we did 5 months before for a Friday (in summer hols but a work day).

We're going to do 3 months before (mid May for September) and I'm gonna ask for RSVP by a month later. Done save the dates already as we needed loads of our guests to get dates in diary cos we need about half of them to actually sing at the ceremony!

To be honest I like a save the date at least nine months in advance. Provided I know the date I am not too bothered when I get the 'official' invitation.

I have been told I am going to be invited to my friend's wedding in August this year, but I have not had a save the date yet which is annoying as I am wanting to plan holidays, although I guess I can just ask her the exact date next time we speak.

So the earlier the better from my point of view

I think that is why people send save the dates early to make sure people can block out the date in the diary, then send invitations a bit later to provide further details (and act as a reminder to anyone who has forgotten)

We did a facebook save the date (not very classy but very useful as a communication tool!) and sent invites out about 7 weeks before the wedding

we did Save The Date's a year before hand and sent the invites out 4 months in advance. Seems a long way off but given that we have to confirm numbers with the venue 6 weeks in advance we couldn't leave it that late

It's handy to send the day time invites before the evening ones if u are tied to or limited to numbers So u can 'up grade' evening guests with out them knowing!

Be prepared to chase rsvps as well
