bridesmaid dilemma - wwyd

im 32 , getting married this year in a small venue with aprox 50 guests. i cant decide whether to have a bridesmaid or not.i want the weddign to be be informal and low key and i feel like having a bridesmaid might be a bit ott. plus i would feel bad asking one friedna nd leaving the other out, so then i would have to have two, which i definitely think is ott. dp is having a best man. should i have a bridesmaid to balance out?

I had a similar wedding to you and asked my sister. But it was only to sign the register really. She chose a dress she'd wear again, and came with me for dress fittings etc but it wasn't so formal as to give her any responsibilities IYKWIM.

thanks dogeared. yes, i definitely would just let her choose whatever dress she wanted. someone said to me that as dp is having a best man then i should really have someone to 'balance things out' . i guess what im more worried about is asking one friend and leaving the other out.

Have one if you want one. Don't feel pressured to if you don't. I had 38 guests and two bridesmaids, my sister and my best friend. It was nice not so much for the walking down the aisle bit, but for the morning before helping me get ready and the night before downing cheap plonk and generally relaxing. You can have that without any official titles though.

We had an informal wedding and I chose not to have any bridesmaids. If either of us had a sister I probably would have - but we don't so I didn't! DH had a best man. I still asked one of my friends to sign the register etc. It all worked fine for us (and took away hassle of thinking about bridesmaid dresses).

forester - i suppose i could just have her sign the register with me. and maybe give toher firend another role, like a reading or something. hmmm, thanks .

You could get one friend to be bridesmaid & the other to sign the register. It doesn't have to be your bridesmaid who signs.

Could you sit down with both friends & say you were thinking of not having any bridesmaids, but wondered if you should have 1. Ask how they would feel if one was bridesmaid & the other signed the register. They could flip a coin. If they're not happy with you only having one of them, have none. ???

Would your DP consider 'downgrading' his best man to witness? Then you could each just have a witness (of course then you've got the issue of choosing them, but perhaps your second friend could do a reading)? It is slightly strange, I think, to have a best man and no maid of honour, but hardly the end of the world.
