Wedding planning to do list

DP proposed on Xmas day and I have darted thinking about what sort of wedding we would like. But I've no idea where to start.

Someone mentioned it's good to allocate a budget to each thing/part of the wedding. Could someone possibly post a list of things that need organising/paying for so that I can start thinking about how much we can spend on each bit?

Wanting to keep costs as low as I can so really need to sort out budgeting first.

First and foremost you need to book a venue and then a photographer because these are the things that get booked up quickly.
If you want a designer dress from a boutique i'd advise looking a year ahead.

A friend recommended to me "the Which Guide to Getting Married" - only a couple of pounds from Amazon, and I found the lists/timelines/budgeting guides very useful.

Second tanfastic's point re venue and photographer first and foremost.

It just feels like there's too much to think about.

Bookmarks thread as DD is getting married next Christmas.

They have booked venue but need to find a caterer. Champagne already bought in the pre-Christmas sales. Church is booked.

Choose bridesmaids and get them to agree in outfits - DD's are scouting sales now and liaising via facebook/texts.

Photographer is in family (professional) as is cakemaker.

Table decs etc will be what they find in sales (do you see the theme here?)

Band is friends (all at Uni). Flowers, invites etc still to be sorted - but invites will be homemade, as will place cards. (100 guests)

The guest list is hard- - trying to include everyone & stick to budget.

Off to a wedding dress sale tomorrow..........

Thanks. Our budget is 4k. DP said 5k at a push. But we want to be really sensible. We need to move this year do all our savings are going into buying the house. So exciting though

My top tip would be to decide what's really important to you (other than actually getting married to someone you love :D) and spend in those areas, then save in areas that aren't so important to you. e.g. we wanted great photos and good live music for evening do, so e.g. we scrapped drinks on arrival: fuck what anyone else thought - at £5 per small glass of bucks fizz, I was willing to offend!!

Sorry, just remembered...Sundays tend to be cheaper than Fridays and Saturdays venue wise if that helps? We did a Sunday before a bank holiday, so most guests still had the next day to recover, saved us a fortune.
