Is wearing a white dress as a guest really that bad....

If it's short , with black and white accessories??

Or a different hue e.g. cream, oyster?

I have an amazing hat black and white, the dress I bought last year for another do, it's black and white too but due to weight loss no longer fits me and looks silly. The only dresses I can find on line that will look good with it are white/cream etc.etc????

What to do? Plus links please to any decent black and white dresses size 8-10.

I think white or all black are the two big nos for weddings.Well that and upstaging the bride.Or shouting "It should have been MEEEEEeeeee".
Oyster or cream with black accessories sounds ok though.Or you could wear a black dress if the hat is black and white thus avoiding the funereal look of all black.

Not at all.

I wore a white shift dress to a friends wedding, with gold accessories. I asked her first and she said 'well as long as youre not accessorising it with a veil and a bouquet you'll be fine' Grin.

I think as long as its not remotely bride-y its fine

It depends. If you know for certain that the bride is wearing the full meringue and full-length veil, and your dress is knee-length with black trim, then fine. If the bride is wearing a less traditional dress, then it's completely taboo.

Basically, you don't want anything that could get you mistaken for the bride, or anything that could steal her thunder.

I think its a no no sorry. No white or cream or oyster for a wedding. M & S have very simple black dresses as do sainsburys and asda if you are on a budget.

I have to admit that this was a fear of mine - I wore a very simple non-traditional dress and it would have been easy for another guest to have looked as "bridey" as I did. Luckily, everyone else looked fantastic, and nothing like me. :)

On the other hand, I did wear a completely ivory trouser suit to a friend's wedding - but I phoned her first to make sure that she wasn't doing a Bianca Jagger, and that it was OK with her - and I accessorised with black.

Wouldn't it be easiest to phone the bride so that she can tell you herself. We can only guess at what she'll be wearing or how she'd feel about your outfit.

Thanks for tips, Wanted to avoid black dress as not v "weddingy" at high summer wedding but yes with the hat it might look ok....

Brides dress is full on proper no mistaking it wedding frock, train, the works.

Any links???!! I have budget of £100ish want it to be good quality. The black and white dress I bought last year for a christening that I wanted to wear is now too big due to weight loss and looks silly...

Have you thought about having it taken in professionally? A dressmaker will only charge you £10-£20 and it will fit beautifully again.
I have quite an hourglass figure and quite often buy a size up and take it in as fits so much better that way - if you already have the right dress then why not give it a go?

hmm, you're not one of mine are you? if so the only thing you should consider is ice creams and small children - I'm just saying with the raspberry ripple.....

I'd go for getting your dress taken in, - my Mum had her dress altered professionally and it was only £8 - bargain and she loves what's she's wearing.

My MIL wore an ivory dress with black accessories to my wedding. Didn't bother me but it caused a lot of negative comments from other guests. If the bride is happy with your choice and you don't mind comments - go for it. If not - red & black perhaps?

From how you've described the bride's dress, it sounds like it wouldn't be a problem, but I suppose it depends how Bridezilla the bride has become. My mum had a function the other day and her hat was black and white. She ended up in this Phase Eight dress and it actually looked really good. I was expecting the dress to need more matchy-matchy type colours, but it worked perfectly. I suppose my point is black and white hats don't have to go with completely black and white dresses.

Failing that, slightly over budget, something like this? Not sure what the colour would be like in real life though.
