Kids' Sporrans

At what age should boys wear a sporran with a kilt at a weddoing? I was advised "it's up to you- sometimes it's not until they are 11 or so". I thought it was younger.

I thought boys always wore them (apart from toddlers of course), and girls when wearing kilt like skirts don't. I may be wrong...

I make kilts and a lot of people ask for sporrans for children as soon as they are walking, but it's just personal choice really.

You get ones for babies, but the first properly made leather one is for about 18 months and older.

I put one on my 3 year old, but I wouldn't think it was odd if others his age didn't wear one. They still look very cute with just the kilt.

I was hoping to get away with my 9 year old not wearing one- I'm worried about his ezcema, and the sporran rubbing. It sounds as if 9 is too old not to wear a sporran.

I wouldn't think it was odd if he wasn't wearing one, but then I'm very much of the mind that anything goes with kilts, especially for boys.

Well- you're the expert!
I'll see what it looks like without the sporran when we take him to the hire shop to try it on again.

You say in another post that your DS is also going to be wearing a kilt- don't you think it'll be odd that they both won't be wearing one and will look the same?

My 5 year old wore one at my brother's wedding last year. I relinquished all resposibility, DB hired it in job lot at kilt store and it came complete with jkt, shoes, socks, sporran etc.
I wasn't sure how it would look, but actually he did look sweet and really enjoyed having the same outfit as everyone else.

Julia3000 · 28/12/2010 18:52

Even though my DS will be dressed as a pageboy (her choice rather than a bridesmaid), I am assuming she she shouldn't wear a sporran, as she's a girl.

I don't think girls ever wear sporrans- even in pipe bands etc.

Greedychops · 28/12/2010 19:50

No I wouldn't put a sporran on a girl.

Tootlesmummy · 28/12/2010 19:51

My DS wore a kilt to my wedding and he was 18 months old. He was so cute in it.

Louii · 28/12/2010 19:54

My DS wore the kilt to his aunts wedding and wore a sporran, would not look right without it for a formal occasion.

Confused as to how wearing one could irritate excema though?

Julia3000 · 28/12/2010 20:01

I thought it might rub- I've obviously never worn one (a kilt- let alone a sporran!), so I am guessing. He gets very dry skin which would be agrevated by anything rubbing- and I don't want his day ruined by being uncomfotable.
