Partial solar eclipse (12th August) and Perseid Meteor shower peak (12-13 August)

Bit of ‘spaceweather’ this week, we’re lucky enough to have a partial solar eclipse and the perseids peak this week, all at the same time! And it looks like for the majority of us, there’ll be clear skies as well. More information on the solar eclipse here and here.

Amazon can’t deliver eclipse viewing glasses until after the event, anyone know where else to get them, eg supermarkets as I’m rural?

Gonna miss the eclipse due to risk to eyes but planning on watching the meteor shower with the two young teens. Gonna be knackered for work the next day but I think it’ll be worth it!

threescoops ~ we got a pair of eclipse glasses with a space magazine (something like the BBC's 'The Sky at Night' type of thing) years ago for another partial eclipse ~ might be worth seeing if any of the 'space' magazines are doing them this time around?

I was looking at the ones on Amazon before but didn't know which to buy as I also don't want to risk damaging anyone's eyes.

I just was looking and it doesn't seem as though delivery is likely.

There is one site that ships from Latvia and the prices on the website are going up as you look at it.

I have asked if we can go along to a local event and we might if that is possible

We have got some glasses as I had a sudden thought last week that they would sell out and ordered some from Amazon. I shall also be going out with my colander to look at it, we did this last time and it was quite good and it's a safe way of seeing it. Husband has ordered some camera lens attachments as well,

Netweather have just issued their partial solar eclipse forecast for tomorrow.... and it's looking ok for most of us...

I was wondering what people thought of the solar eclipse yesterday? We went up a hill and watched (along with loads of people so there was a good crowd!) DDs thought it was amazing and DD2 wants to see another one!

And when it comes to the Perseids ~ I sat out just after 11pm and saw a meteor almost straight away.

The eclipse was shit if you didn’t have glasses, when it was really clear and geeet to watch.

we went to a local space to try and get to as dark an area as possible at 11pm and caught around 6 meteors, within a short period. Given it wasn’t even the peak, I was impressed.

great idea about the space mags! Thanks. In the event I got a couple of the last pairs in town from a camera shop. Was fun. Now got to work out where to put the £5 treasures away so they will be bequeathed to any hypothetical descendants when this happens next time as I won't be around by then.....

We were meant to go to an organised event but it was full within minutes (the organisers severely underestimated the popularity!) so we went down to the seafront & watched it using my digital telescope. Was really interesting - could see sun spots & got so great images.
The kids thought it was really cool.
Last night DH & I went & sat in the garden & saw a 3 meteors in about an hour.

As for the Perseids ~ it's too cloudy to see anything tonight so might try tomorrow night when the metoffice are forecasting clearer skies. Still should be in with a good chance of seeing them before they finish around the 24th August.

As forecast, there were clearer skies last night so went out just after 11pm for about 25 minutes and saw 2 in the space of 5 minutes, so still a good show going on....
