Snow for Stansted & A1 North Saturday midnight to Sunday morning?

Hi,
Could the lovely meteorology people on here chat about the likelihood of this?
I'm due to land at Stansted midnight on Sat and travel M11 A1 for three hours North.
Is this crazy, or should I stay in Stansted Travelodge until Sunday morning and travel in the light?

Hopeful bump?

I'm doing a similar journey north at the same time.

The predictions are currently looking like a small amount of snow and mostly rain.

The predictions for where is getting snow keep getting further and further north so I'm inclined to go for it.

(I'm doing Cambridge to Newcastle)

It's a difficult one ~ I'd be in two minds about it so my thoughts are all a bit 'might' and 'possibly!' First of all, snow is quite difficult to forecast and it might be that you land and there's hardly any snow. Your flight arrives on time and you'd possibly be ok, driving on main roads (through possibly heavy snow) as you travel north.

But the metoffice have issued Amber warnings for snow and ice now and you'd be driving through those warning areas and if your flight is delayed, you could end up driving through some really heavy snow.

If it wasn't such a long distance I'd probably go for it but a 3 hour drive, in icy/possibly snowy conditions after a 3 hour flight as well, I'd probably err on the side of caution and go for a nice warm Travelodge!

@GloriaSmud

and if your flight is delayed,,

For info the airport forecasts for that part of the UK under discussion don’t yet currently run as far as Saturday evening but there are potentially problems with freezing fog tomorrow AM at both Stansted and East Midlands..

If it is foggy it may clear before any precipitation arrives but I think you’d have to expect some disruption/some delays.

Thanks @notimagain

I'd appreciate any updates - but I have booked an overnight hotel at Stansted so I can drive North on Sunday midmorning and not Sunday 1am morning!

OK, I’ll do my best…

Latest version of the Stansted forecast covers tomorrow evening as far as midnight and has light snow (think small flakes, not a lot) with periods of heavier snow (think big flakes) starting at around 2000 UTC through to at least midnight…that current forecast stops at that point so no idea what the thoughts are about very early AM Sunday

The late Sat evening forecasts aren’t out yet for places like East Midlands…I’ll keep an eye out for them.

Probably a wise move there Peasnbeans and have a safe journey.

notimagain · 04/01/2025 07:59

Morning.

I think the hotel is looking a very good move, both the Stansted and East Midlands forecasts are grim (various combinations/timings of snow and then freezing rain) through until at least 0600 tomorrow.

@notimagain Thank you for replying - you never know, but it's still cost a bit to err on the side of caution - but safety can't be bought, I suppose.
