Can we drive to Scotland next week

DH has unexpected holiday from work next week and our first thought was to book a cabin in Scotland somewhere. Any guesses on if it’ll be safe to travel from northern England? The news is all floods/ snow drifts- is the horrendous weather likely to continue , and are roads likely to be safe?

Where roughly?

For example on Wednesday carter bar was covered in snow but nothing in borders.

Cairngorms have a tonne of snow but the ploughs are out constantly.

West coast usually milder.

Be better to decide an area then look at main routes and ten day forecast. Further north more likely it is to change quickly.

From what I can see on forecast, the worst of the weather tails off this weekend - but hey, this is Scotland in winter, so any guesses are valid!

In practical terms of location - because "Scotland" is a fairly wide-ranging in the context - pick somewhere you've got a choice of routes. Much of the road chaos recently has been where the main road (e.g. A90 between Dundee and Aberdeen) has been closed in part due to damage to a bridge. Officially a diversion offered by the council / roads dept has to be the same standard (i.e. no HGVs on C-roads ...) meaning very long diversions via the A9 .... or you find the unofficial diversion on minor roads with everyone else.

It's so unpredictable but I would go for it. Dumfries and Galloway is nice and not too far

It's been really really REALLY wet this winter so would look at somewhere away from rivers/ lochs. If you can I think a hotel in Edinburgh/ Glasgow or Dundee might be a better bet, it's miserable in the countryside just now and feels like it's dark between 2.30 and 10 am !

I’m guessing Glenshee is out?

@Howmanysleepsnow not necessarily. We stay at dalnoid. That road is kept super clear.

That was exactly where I was considering! Decided against it in the end, but found somewhere else and weather is treating us well so far!

You probably shouldn't if you're not capable of making that decision for yourself. If you get into bother are you going to come back here and blame everyone who said you'd be fine? 😂🤦‍♀️

Pp already said they didn’t go, not a crazy thing to ask how road conditions are ina place.
