An unusually early warning for the low possibility of some extreme rainfall for NE Scotland at the end of the week. Note the text of the warning!

Please keep a close eye on this one and be prepared to act if necessary. Ensure that if you live in an at risk area that you are ready.

Eek Cheshire has gone to an Amber and am out at a wedding tomorrow evening. Hope the taxi can pick us up!

That’s where we are starting from tomorrow afternoon 😩Or not …

RoyKentFanclub · 19/10/2023 15:08

The whole of Brechin has been told to evacuate now and the army is being deployed in some areas

TokyoSushi · 19/10/2023 15:25

Torrential rain here in Cheshire, but I think it's just a squall rather than anything long lasting

Bright sunshine in East Cheshire/ Staffs border
no doubt our turn will come !

WindsChange · 19/10/2023 15:38

@OhYouBadBadKitten so sorry to trouble you at this busy time but really concerned about this wedding tomorrow! Supposed to be travelling from east Cheshire to west Cheshire around lunch time and then back again around 11pm.
Both areas are in amber warning all Friday and Saturday but close to the yellow area and don’t seem to be especially heavy for predicted rain fall amounts?
Do you think roads/ taxis will be running/ safe to travel? We don’t really feel we can’t not attend this wedding…

Thoughts with everyone in the red area and severely impacted like Brechin.

Got up this morning to find that the woman across the road's artificial lawn had completely blown off and was lying on the pavement.

Winds, can you go earlier tomorrow and stay overnight? You can then see what roads are like for going home. I'm afraid I don't know what your local roads are like, or how likely they are to flood. But I would not rely on using app rainfall totals to try and guess what might happen. I would also bear in mind that this rainfall comes on top of saturated ground.

I know its mean to your neighbour, but I don't think artificial lawns getting ripped up is a bad thing at all 😁

Hedjwitch · 19/10/2023 15:50

Love the artificial grass being blown off. Mess with nature and she gets you right back!

I agree. She has THREE of them at the front of her house different colours 😱

Thanks OYBBK, good to bear in mind. Sadly no way of us rearranging travel arrangements / nowhere to stay over at the wedding so we will have to just have to keep our fingers crossed and see what happens Sad. If it wasn’t a wedding I would be happy to stay in safe.
Gutted for the couple especially as they have family travelling from further afield too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2023 16:11

I really would be prepared to be trapped then Winds. I personally would not travel in an amber flood, especially towards the end of the period when water will be accumulating. Re-evaluate tomorrow,

How porous is that vile stuff? It was bad enough when people started paving over their gardens. The rain has to go somewhere. Otherwise you get floods.

(I have approved of fake grass once, at a recent wedding. On the fake grass, laid over a ?cement yard?, a bit like an outdoor carpet, I was fine. When I went to be in the photos, the high heels I had felt obiged to wear sank into the real lawn where they were being taken.)

SequentialAnalyst · 19/10/2023 16:24

@WindsChange if it's that bad, there might be a second celebration arranged for those who couldn't make it, even if the event is not postponed. The happy couple may have no choice but to go ahead with the actual ceremony.

Whereabouts are you travelling to and from?
I am local so may know of likely trouble spots?

DoneByWeds · 19/10/2023 16:52

Been watching the weather back home while on my hols - side effect of having a weather related job. Hope you are all staying safe.

Interestingly, here in Mallorca, the wind is picking up as the tail of Babet sweeps across the island in the next 12 hrs. Alert out here and local media reports that this is the October storm that shepherds in the end the summer season.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2023 19:31

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-scotland-67146840 live updates are here.

I notice that people who havent been explicitly told to evacuate the river area around Brechin seem to be staying put. And one gentleman who has been told to leave thinks that his garden wall will hold. I really hope so. River levels are due to start topping the defences around 9pm, very early into the red warning.

Storm Babet latest: Rare red weather alert comes into force - BBC News

Perth and Kinross; Dundee; Angus and south Aberdeenshire are all included in the most severe warning.

I wouldn't be surprised if that wall is just cinder block. Might as well be made of sand.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2023 19:37

A couple of radar images for you. Now and predicted radar at 10pm. The NE scotland rain is moving westwards and will keep piling in the rain.

The SE england rain is moving directly north. I do wonder if there will be renewed warnings for this. It will depend on expected impact. But the NE Scotland situation is much more dire.

I see the resident who won't leave is staying put because his wife won't leave. They are quite advanced in age. They also live on River Street, which sounds like the Universe is giving them a strong hint, but have they ever faced weather like this before, I wonder?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2023 20:16

I very much doubt they have Analyst.

Aaaaand.... the SE England warning is back again!
Small potatoes compared to 'up north' but it will cause some localised flooding issues.

Tragically a lady has died in Angus. Her body was found in a river this afternoon.

Awful news.

I saw that 4000 homes were without power earlier, fairly early into the red warning.
