The Perseids peak tonight - some information here.
Unfortunately, it's looking cloudy for a lot of the country but there might be some breaks in the cloud for meteor spotters!

If there’s only one meteor shower you watch this year, make sure it’s the Perseids. Get ready for hundreds of bright meteors and the occasional fireball!

Thanks for this. If it's cloudy is it not worth staying up for?

GloriaSmud · 12/08/2023 21:52

I suppose it depends how late you want to stay up! About 11.30pm is late enough for me but if it's total cloud cover at that time, I won't want to wait up to see if it clears. But if there are big breaks in the cloud (and away from streetlighting, which is the other consideration), then there's the possibility of seeing something.

At the moment where we are (Leicester), it's just about total cloud cover with some small gaps and it's a bit showery, which doesn't bode well!

Too cloudy here (Bucks) but I did see one just after midnight last night.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/08/2023 23:38

The dds and I sat out last night as was v clear here and saw about 5 inc one amazing one with a long lasting trail. Tonight it has been hit and miss for cloud but I've seen another 5. Completely clouded over now so I think that's it for tonight.

GloriaSmud · 13/08/2023 07:48

I'm glad other people have seen something!
I didn't go and look - we had total cloud cover and it's rained overnight. There's still the chance of seeing something over the next few nights until the 24th August, so hoping for clear skies this week.

Pretty good for a few hours in east Anglia last night.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/08/2023 08:10

I stayed up very late. Nothing. The cloud cover was too dense.

SconeisGone · 12/08/2024 18:51

Any chance of seeing these this year @GloriaSmud ?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 12/08/2024 19:03

I got up just after midnight. Saw one meteor but was distracted by the other light show

SconeisGone - I think most people will have clear skies so should be able to see either/both meteors or the Northern lights tonight (I'm on a narrowboat in the middle of nowhere at the moment so hoping to see both!)

I guess best chance if after midnight when I may have conked out?

The boys slept in the tent last night and we got up at 1.15am to look. We live in a dark skies area of South Kent and had a glorious view.

GloriaSmud · 15/08/2024 11:29

I'm back from my narrowboat travels ~ did anyone see anything of the Perseids? I saw two on Monday and one, Tuesday night, so not too bad.

We did, Monday night on the Kent coast.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/08/2024 21:45

6 on Mon night from my N Wales garden. Inc a couple of very long ones.

EasilyDisturbed · 15/08/2024 21:49

No but we did get Northern Lights on Monday in Hampshire
