Unusually cold?

What’s the usual temperature for this time of year? If my memory is correct it’s usually mild and wet (Typically energy prices hike and we get freezing weather!) is it going to stay this cold or will it get milder. Will we have to face the whole winter in the freezing cold.

It's definitely colder than usual. Google tells me the average high is 7° and average low is 3° where I am. We're well below that. 🥶

NewNameForXmas · 11/12/2022 00:19

-2 and freezing fog in Berkshire (can't see the end of the garden!). Does it just feel colder as it's been so mild till now?

shebathequeenof · 11/12/2022 00:22

Much colder than previous years like summer was much hotter. I hope its not like this always from now on.

Ladybird69 · 11/12/2022 00:41

@shebathequeenof i really hope that this isn’t the future as extreme weather mucks with my health.

Yes, much colder than average. Naturally, it would be, just as energy costs have rocketed. The World Hates Us.

Fordian · 11/12/2022 00:52

You see, being 60 (😂) I can easily recall real cold snaps like this, in December. It's just that 'winter' has crept towards Feb/March over the past 60 years.

The planet doesn't hate us; we've just disregarded it.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/12/2022 01:09

I was thinking it's been unusually mild until the last few days.

Currently 1C in my bit of Scotland

CuriousMama · 11/12/2022 01:12

Snow here NE England. Very cold.

I'm really worrying about people who can't afford heating.

SoupaDoupa · 11/12/2022 01:16

-5 in Surrey. It's bloody freezing and I can't quite understand why we don't have a lovely blanket of snow covering the ground. Would have preferred this weather over the Christmas period when I didn't need to leave the house.

It's not been mild here! These temps are definitely colder than most Decembers.

KangarooKenny · 11/12/2022 07:14

I remember snow on the ground in December multiple times, but then I’m old !

panko · 11/12/2022 07:15

People will die due to not putting heating on. It's so sad.

This! And I'm in my 40s. I swear that Christmases used to be really cold and by February things were warming up.

Because it's been really dry. You can't have snow until the precipitation to fall. It's definitely cold enough to snow though, and has been in many parts of the country.

WhaleInAManger · 11/12/2022 07:19

I agree with winter creeping backwards.

I like my gardening and lots of the info out there re frost risks seem wrong now. Especially older works.

All seem to say the garden will die down when the frosts arrive in Oct/Nov but that hardly ever happens and my garden is only really dying down now.

However lots say you can start planting out out March onwards but that's really too early now, imo. Too high a risk of hard frosts and the associated damage.

Numbat2022 · 11/12/2022 07:20

Sorry, typo there - basically you can't have snow without precipitation. If it wouldn't have been raining normally, it's not going to snow.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/12/2022 07:21

It's cold, but cold spells do happen most years. I agree that it seems worse then normal because of the mild start to the winter. Until this week I'd only had to de-ice the car once.

Spendonsend · 11/12/2022 07:27

I agree that october and november seem milder but march seems much colder these last few years. All my gardening books seem wrong. Although my granny always said dont plant my seedlings out til 1st june due to the risk of frost

I can remember so many mornings scraping ice off the car from early november but the last few years thats hardly happened.

DeathMetalMum · 11/12/2022 07:27

We had snow yesterday, only a covering of cars really and a Facebook memory from 5 years ago was photos of toddler dc making a snowman. We don't get snow that often here, so while yes it's colder than average it's not completely unseasonal.

Pictograph · 11/12/2022 07:31

It's definitely colder than usual. Tomorrow it's forecast not to get above zero at all during the day - that's really unusual.

MassiveSalad22 · 11/12/2022 07:33

I was freaking out that it was unusually warm until a couple of weeks ago. November was mild, didn’t need a coat for the school run.

I know. It's a shocking state of affairs 😞

Tricyrtis2022 · 11/12/2022 10:04

OH's family were butchers for a few generations and the story from them is that December will often start cold, but then the week before Christmas it warms up again. When their shops were still going there was an annual worry about the turkeys hanging in the shop, because they couldn't fit them all in the walk-in fridge.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2022 10:17

Its certainly below average at the moment. I'll show graphs this evening. But you can see that the central england temperature is running a couple of degrees below average. Contrast that to November where it was running almost 3 degrees above average and the contrast feels stark.

Unusually cold?
BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/12/2022 10:25

Car thermometer said -8° this morning 🥶 London/Kent borders. We are forecast possible snow overnight. I'm also old, so can remember it being cold like this in December before, and also have Facebook memories of snowmen building etc at this time of year.
