Seriously though where are the Thunderstorms?

They don't thrill me or enhance my life but with this humidity and temperature, why are none appearing?
Is this not the perfect conditions for them? And something to relieve the current temperature we are all living with would be gladly welcomed.
What's going on??

We had a few drops earlier.

WoundTheBobbinUp · 12/07/2022 22:27

Yes I've been wondering the same! Hoping for a good storm but none forecast :(

Titsywoo · 12/07/2022 22:28

Doesn't look like we will have one for a while. Maybe after the hot spell due from Sun to Tues?

Nat6999 · 12/07/2022 22:31

It bounced down in Sheffield this morning, it's also been cloudy, I was really hoping for thunder storms to clear the atmosphere. It will start raining a week on Saturday when the school holidays start. I can't ever remember being so uncomfortable in the heat as I have been in the last few days, I always used to love it but as I'm getting older it really doesn't suit me.

IdiotCreatures · 13/07/2022 09:49

We had clouds yesterday was really hoping for some rain. There are still clouds this morning but they are high up and wispy. Poor plants and trees they could all do with a drink!!

There is a possibility on Wednesday that the lowering in temperatures will be accompanied by thunderstorms. We haven't had thunderstorms yet because one of the ingredients needed is instability. Warm air rising into cold air. With high pressure in charge at present we don't have that.

I might have been on MN too long but... I'm glad OYBBK: Summer Edition is a thing, in addition to OYBBK: Queen of Snow.

Im glued to this most of the time seeing if theres any chance of a good storm

Not today by the looks of it. In the UK storms normally come up in a north east direction, ie coming from the south west, so I keep my eye on Brittany

That did make me laugh a lot. I'm like the genie that appears whenever weather gets sufficiently interesting. Grin

You can take a break for a few days if you like. Smile

You need more than just heat and just some humidity to get thunderstorms, you have to get that humid air to rise and then rising....as @OhYouBadBadKitten says that trigger is usually a Cold front - and there aren't any over the UK right now..

In addition (again as OYBBK says) ATM there's a High Pressure system over UK/north west Europe - in a High pressure system the whole air mass is being squeezed downwards so with that downwards squeeze on the air there's even less tendency for air to rise and thunderstorms to be able to form.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/07/2022 16:47

very good points notimagain.

notimagain · 14/07/2022 17:42

@OhYouBadBadKitten

You know what is bound to happen now?

...It'll start flashing, crashing, banging and chucking it down somewhere in the UK tonight and people will be back with: "but you said......" 🙄

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/07/2022 17:50

I know! I quake every time I write definitive statements on here. Grin Spotted some cumulus bubbling up an hour ago and thought 'don't you dare!'

megletthesecond · 16/07/2022 23:06

I've been wondering this too.

TitInATrance · 19/07/2022 15:00

We’ve had thunderstorms in Devon and Cornwall and it’s taken out all the rail signalling. Be careful what you wish for.

Sat on train

Oblomov22 · 20/07/2022 07:35

Lots of rain in Surrey. Rained at 6pm last night and throughout the night lightly, sporadically.

Thunderstorms in France and Belgium at the moment www.lightningmaps.org/#

I'll have to wait and see if the predicted thunderstorms pop up in London this afternoon.

Thunderstorms in France and Belgium at the moment www.lightningmaps.org/#

I'll have to wait and see if the predicted thunderstorms pop up in London this afternoon.

Looking at the synoptic charts it would appear the group of French/Belgian storms happening ATM are associated with a couple of small troughs of low pressure which are running across parts of the respective countries this AM, from west to east - the UK won't get the benefit of those troughs as a trigger for storms.

What happens in the UK in terms of thunderstorms today will depend on the Cold Front and just how much contrast there is in the characteristics (such as temperature and humidity) between the (hot) air forward of the front and the (colder) air behind the front....

From what people have described on here so far it doesn't look like there isn't a massive contrast, hence the lack of big thunderstorms overnight. If the east of the UK gets hot this PM the contrast in e.g. temperature might increase and that could provide more of a trigger for storms when the Cold Front arrives.

Hope people get whatever they want.

Met office have updated their thunderstorm warning to cover a larger area.

Eagerly awaiting some rain for the garden and a good storm would be nice too.

Nothing here yet - north Hampshire

Trinity65 · 20/07/2022 18:16

South East London
Temperatures cooler and getting a tad breezy now
Clouds darkening whilst the blue sky is pushed aside
Hopefully not long now

IdiotCreatures · 21/07/2022 06:18

So there are lots of clouds around at the moment but it's feeling muggy, I am guessing that the conditions still don't meet criteria for thunderstorms.
I have plans tomorrow afternoon have a feeling it will rain then, because I will have to be out and about!!

Met Office warnings are out tomorrow for the SW, but I'd keep an eye further east too. www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2022-07-22
