Needless to say the UK gets a lot of precipitation and it comes in all forms. I noticed they didn't have my personal favourite:

Bucketing (it) down

Read the article:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4wltytTwXR73XKR3DXq1VDh/mizzle-and-smirr-13-british-words-and-phrases-for-rain

And tell me what they missed!

steppemum · 28/09/2019 22:46

the heavens opened

steppemum · 28/09/2019 22:47

driving rain
pouring

steppemum · 28/09/2019 22:47

in fatc they missed most of the words I use, and included a few I'd never heard of!

From Paddington: a real brolly-buster

StrangersToLove · 28/09/2019 22:52

"That fine rain that really soaks you through"

TyneTeas · 28/09/2019 23:04

Pleutin' down

SofiaAmes · 28/09/2019 23:06

I live in LA, so the closest we get to describing rain is "20% chance" or "much needed" or "drought ending."

steppemum · 28/09/2019 23:09

from a friend in Ireland
It's not raining, it's just that the wind is wet Grin

Cecilandsnail · 28/09/2019 23:11

Drizzle

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/09/2019 23:13

Dreich

In Bristol we also say that snow "pitches" when others say it "settles" or "lays".

Fraggling · 28/09/2019 23:13

I think the article is about regional stuff tbh

No one says raining cats and dogs do they?

I say pissing it down, chucking it down
Downpour if v much

Drizzling? That feels important
Spitting also
Trying to rain =clouds and rain is coming but not quite...

Loads!
Clearly not a definitive article

Maybe we have as many words for rain as (apparently) eskimos have for snow.

Ps raining 'on and off' here at mo!

Lougle · 28/09/2019 23:28

So many. Torrential, 'like April showers but not April.' Monsoon.

Basdan · 29/09/2019 02:26

Bucketing!

jalopy · 29/09/2019 09:48

Apocalyptic

Vintagevixen · 29/09/2019 11:33

Stair rods for heavy rain, as in "its stair rods out there."

I definitely use pissing down, chucking it down, cats and dogs, drizzle, mizzling.

Vintagevixen · 29/09/2019 11:35

Bucketing down and spitting too.

But then I love rainy weather and always get quite excited by it 😂

runlift · 29/09/2019 14:56

I used cats and dogs.
Downpour, drizzle, pelting it down, raining buckets

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/10/2019 19:41

I use: raining cats and dogs.
Siling it down
Coming down in stair rods
Pouring
Torrential
Mizzle
Drizzle
Spotting
Spitting with rain
Chucking it down.
