First metoffice named storm of the Autumn/Winter. Winds of 65-75mph/gusts could reach 80mph in Amber Warning area.

That's rather windy for September. will be interesting to see how the trees hold up.....

Dementedswan · 18/09/2018 16:18

Its very windy in Northumberland near the coast already. Please say it's not going to get worse?

GloriaSmud · 18/09/2018 20:54

Dementedswan ~ You're probably in/quite close to the Amber/yellow warning areas so yes, it's going to get worse and not going to be very pleasant tomorrow.

Perihelion ~ with many of them still having lots of leaves as well, there could be some fallen trees/damage tomorrow.

Where the strongest wind gusts could be at midday tomorrow.

Hopefully most of the wind will be over by the evening rush hour.
Went to look at the GFS wind gusts for the rest of the week and Sunday looks nuts....

Have Southerly 61mph gusts forecast for tomorrow in Edinburgh, and 61mph on Sunday, but from the North, which I'm finding a bit freakyShock

Igneococcus · 19/09/2018 00:24

Thunder storm in the Oban area at the moment and the rain is hammering against the windows.

tapdancingmum · 19/09/2018 07:41

@perihelion @gloriasmud @oybbk

I follow a chap on FB who is an amateur weather forecaster who is saying that the weekend is going to be bad with Sunday being 'a bit fiesty' but the BBC are saying the weekend will be a lot calmer.

How is it that we seem to get better weather forecasts from amateurs than the institution that is the BBC.

I have the BBC app on my phone and it is always completely different from the inbuilt one which is accuweather. Is it due to the BBC not using the Met office anymore and why are they so wrong most of the time?

PiperPublickOccurrences · 19/09/2018 07:41

Already wet in Glasgow but not much sign of the high winds yet.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 19/09/2018 07:50

It was very windy during the night here (near Dundee) but it's all calm again now.

GloriaSmud · 19/09/2018 07:56

@tapdancingmum
I've just looked at the Outlooks for the BBC and the metoffice and they both show a bit of uncertainty. The BBC (meteogroup now) have 'uncertainty concerning the details at present.' The metoffice are perhaps a bit more confident with a, 'Potentially wet and very windy on Sunday.'

It might be that they're both waiting to see what happens with further model runs when it comes to Sunday's low pressure system. It was going right across the middle of the country in the last GFS run I saw. I should think there'll be some warnings coming out in the next day or so if that doesn't change.

Our forecast wind speeds have been increased since I looked last about an hour ago. We are now peaking at 60 mph around 3pm.

GloriaSmud · 19/09/2018 10:19

It's got quite blustery here (Leicester) in the last hour or so.
BBC report here on StormAli.

xcweather for wind observations.

Perihelion · 19/09/2018 10:21

Ours have been bumped up the 65mph.
Have walked the dog in the pishing rain. That's now stopped and the wind's started.

GloriaSmud · 19/09/2018 10:24

Updated weather warnings ~ think the whole country comes under one at some time over the next few days!

My beautiful scented pink buddleia has blown down Sad

Dementedswan · 19/09/2018 10:57

I'm in the amber warning area, been out with the dog and Its a bit blustery but warm Confused nothing too bad yet.

GloriaSmud · 19/09/2018 11:19

More warnings for strong winds Sunday/Monday.

Igneococcus · 19/09/2018 11:30

It is really picking up here now.
I'm in an amber warning at work and yellow at home. I crossed the line on my three mile drive to work.

ChilliPowderMild · 19/09/2018 11:58

I'm in a cabin just outside Aviemore. Ten minutes ago I was out walking in blustery sunshine admiring rainbows.
Totally different now, wind howling and rain horizontal. Battened down the hatches and having a coffee in front of the telly now.

Dementedswan · 19/09/2018 12:06

I spoke to soon, it's very very windy here. No rain yet.

InMySpareTime · 19/09/2018 12:13

I put washing on the line at 9am and it was dry by 11! That doesn't often happen in Manchester, so the storm is doing some good at least here.

Blizy · 19/09/2018 12:45

Does anyone know roughly what time the storm has to reach its peak?
I'm in the Amber zone and it's pretty rough, trees down and branches over roads.

GloriaSmud · 19/09/2018 13:02

Blizy ~ the worst should be over by this evening. Metoffice amber warning finishes at 6pm, the yellow one goes on 'til 10pm.
