I know it's still a long way off but is there any indication of what winter will be like this year. Had to clip my horse much earlier this year than last year, he was starting to resemble a woolly mammoth. My yard owner and I were pondering whether the horses know something we don't and we are in for a cold one.

yay, Moose! I love your Canadian reports!

Slimthistime · 09/10/2017 12:06

it's interesting that no one believes in long range forecasting.

I just really could do without another winter like 2009 or 2010 or even maybe 2008 - I think that was one where it took late March to get a day in double digits?

Freezing pavements and snow etc are such a nightmare and I worry so much about my mum. I have two injuries already so I worry about me too Grin

slim I’d quite like a sensible winter too. Maybe some snowy weather for a few days in January, but from a selfish point of view dd has all sorts of uni application things going on with lots of tests here and there, so I’d like her not to have travel worries.

MusicToMyEars800 · 09/10/2017 18:08

I wouldn't mind a snowy Christmas Smile
I do love the cosy element of winter, snuggling in fluffy pj's and dressing gowns, winter drinks, winter foods Grin

The weather here in the SE is supposed to be warming up towards the weekend, with highs of 18 degrees.

Few more snowy scenes from abroad ~ Rovaniemi (Finland ~ very slight covering there) and the Icehotel in Sweden have had their first snowfalls of the winter.

-12 in Fairbanks but no snow at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/10/2017 09:47

how does that compare to usual flyingpigs?

Eastern Europe seems to start to cool down at the beginning of November according to the latest GFS, but nothing particularly remarkable,

LapinR0se · 22/10/2017 09:54

I am in Switzerland (Geneva) where is has been really unseasonably warm. It's been 20 degrees plus every day since end of August in fact. This time last year there was snow on the mountains but now everything is still lush & green.
Having said that, my friend's tortoises have buried themselves away so maybe they know something we don't.

flyingpigsinclover · 22/10/2017 09:55

You'd expect about 10-11 days of snow in Fairbanks in October.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/10/2017 10:04

That’s interesting Lapin, thanks! It’s useful to hear about how it is in other places compared to usual. Flyingpigs, it’s going to have to get a move on then Grin

DS in Saskatchewan (studying there for a few months) reported first snowfall in Saskatoon on Wednesday night. Friend who works at Vancouver airport said they are anticipating colder than usual winter (though can't recall why).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/10/2017 09:50

We have a big cool down on the cards as we go into November, I think Scotland could possibly see its first snowfall mid month,

BlackeyedSusan · 28/10/2017 20:24

we will have killer blizzards, just like all the other years the express has predicted killer blizzards...

no fecking snow again this year then

flyingpigsinclover · 29/10/2017 09:34

This might not reflect on what is coming but this autumn has been very different in my garden - we still have berries on several trees that the birds have normally stripped by now. Hollyhocks and other flowers have started to flower this last two weeks and we were still seeing baby frogs until a couple of weeks ago. We're still seeing butterflies and bees in abundance and trees have leaves that would normally be bare by now.

misses the point of the thread

GloriaSmud · 29/10/2017 13:04

Blackeyed ~ I think the the Express have nailed it when it comes to the forecasting of this cold snap! More here as well Hmm
Although with the possibility of first snow though, might be time to link to uksnowmap!
