'Tis that time of the year again when the Perseid Meteors peak over the next few nights. This weekend looks good for meteor spotting although spaceweather mentions the moon might be a bit of a problem. There's more information here.

Let's hope for some clear skies!

We sat out for an hour last night, just after Midnight as the sky was clear and people on a Facebook astronomy page were reporting sightings but we didn't see any at all.

GloriaSmud · 11/08/2017 17:13

We had that last year, a few nights of standing/sitting outside, number of meteors spotted ~ a big fat zero!
I'll have a look for them tonight but think there might be too much cloud about, tomorrow night looks better.

:) partially cloudy down here this evening, so hopefully....

GloriaSmud · 12/08/2017 20:23

Yes, same here. Was way too cloudy last night but broken cloud this evening so really hoping we're in luck tonight.

Ooh this is exciting -I've never seen see a meteor shower. Maybe tonight will be my FIRST?
Bit cloudy here, alas.

GloriaSmud · 12/08/2017 23:05

Just heading out to see if we can spot anything.

Have seen two. Well pleased with that and better than last year's effort!

I've been looking, I saw a bright 'star' moving what appeared to be diagonally upwards, I assume that wasn't part of it? I don't know which part of the sky to watch, really. I'm not good on all things sky.

itusedtobeverydifferent · 13/08/2017 00:00

It can't be, as it's still there shining away 10 minutes later...

NorthernLurker · 13/08/2017 00:00

We're on mull at the moment. Fairly clear sky, no light pollution = lots seen tonight. Some tiny, some really big ones.

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 13/08/2017 00:10

We're oop north and have seen about 15-20 tonight before the clouds came in and covered the sky, the buggers!

Was a lovely quiet hour or so with the DCs in the garden just staring up at the sky and talking in whispers so as not to annoy the neighbours Smile

itusedtobeverydifferent · 13/08/2017 00:28

I ended up seeing two coming from just above the plough- actually took my breath away.

GloriaSmud · 13/08/2017 11:28

Oh to be in the middle of nowhere and away from street lighting!
Another opportunity to see them tonight but not sure whether we'll see anything here (Leicester) as it's forecast to be cloudy.

We saw lovely big meteors last night, not as many as previous years but very big and bright.

junglebookisthebest · 13/08/2017 11:34

Saw a decent number last night in manchester in just over an hour at about 11ish. Light pollution is pretty bad so was quite chuffed to see anything...

GloriaSmud · 13/08/2017 20:45

High broken cloud here this evening. Hopefully it stays that way for later on.

We saw two tonight! Only remembered at about 10pm so didn't walk to the park but lay down in the garden. It was brilliant!

MadisonAvenue · 14/08/2017 00:05

Saw quite a lot last night, some were very bright, but it's too cloudy tonight. I've just been out again to check but I couldn't see any stars at all.

123bananas · 14/08/2017 00:10

Saw over 20 last night in Derbyshire, only sat out from 11:30 ish until around 01:00. Too cloudy tonight.

The kids have slept with their curtains open hoping to see shooting stars to wish on, but were asleep within minutes. They wanted to camp in the garden in order to see them.
