issued by the metoffice for heavy rain.
The storm that gave the U.S its snow looks like it's going to give us rain and in the places that could do without it.

Windy but hurricane Bawbag was worse. Dogs not impressed by their bowls of breakfast blowing away from them in the garden. Think I'll chum DD to school.

GloriaSmud · 29/01/2016 08:59

The BBC has live reporting here on Storm Gertrude (as it's been named now) and
TrafficScotland is a useful source of information.

Hope everyone in the warning areas keeps safe.

Can hardly see Scotland/North of England on the on the EarthWind map here.

Perihelion · 29/01/2016 09:16

Red wind warning for Shetland and Orkney.
Gust of 91mph recorded on the Forth Road Bridge.
Think we've peaked in Edinburgh........now to see if we get snow later Grin

GloriaSmud · 29/01/2016 10:12

I'm not surprised at the Red Warning being issued.
Perihelion ~ I was thinking of you when I saw the snow warning covered Edinburgh. I hope you've got your sledge polished! Grin

OP posts:
Perihelion · 29/01/2016 10:40

Actually Gloria I was hoping for nice benign weather tomorrow as I'm taking DD horse riding......will pack the sledge and maybe turn it into a sleigh ride Grin

GloriaSmud · 29/01/2016 11:26

Ooo all Lapland-like!

OP posts:
Perihelion · 30/01/2016 07:52

SNOW GrinGrinGrin
Proper fat flakes...and wind. A blizzard!Haven't seen this for years here. And that's almost at sea level and near the Forth.

GloriaSmud · 30/01/2016 08:24

Oh how lovely, Perihelion.
I've been looking at Traffic Scotland's cameras of snowy scenes with a Envy face!

YarnYarnYarn · 30/01/2016 21:22

Sigh. It's just not going to snow down here in the south this winter, is it? Sad

Perihelion · 30/01/2016 23:10

Snow melted, ground's too warm and wet. But felt brutally cold with just above zero temp, sleety rain at times and a stiff wind. Oh and some sun and some more teasing snow flurries. Sleet in French is apparently neige fondue Grin
Yarn how far South are you? With the weirdness of this winter I wouldn't say it's over yet. Think the long range is hinting at cooler later in February.
Wind has died down for now, before storm Henry, which looks like a rerun of Gertrude but inviting more of the UK to join in this time.

YarnYarnYarn · 31/01/2016 11:41

PERI, I'm in Oxfordshire. We're having the most tedious dull, damp winter ever. Late Feb, you say?

GloriaSmud · 31/01/2016 13:36

I seem to remember the metoffice in one of their long-range forecasts have always said that it would be sometime in February before proper cold took hold.

This morning's updated warnings.

HesSpartacus · 31/01/2016 21:48

OYBBK - how's the long range forecast looking? Please tell me an end to the warm mizzle is in sight?

Perihelion · 01/02/2016 10:10

Tedious and damp sounds ok Wink we had double the normal rain in December. Lots more rain in Jan and flip flopping temperatures. And wind.....It feels like the weather/seasons are a bit late to arrive.
Amber wind warning for pretty much all of Scotland. 65mph gusts already on Forth Road Bridge with the wind strengthening into this evening.

kipperydippery · 01/02/2016 10:14

Perihelion - I get my hat trick! F10 on the forecast for this evening....

Perihelion · 01/02/2016 12:39

kipper I think Henry is going to be stronger and more sustained the Gertrude. Looking at full Forth Road bridge closure this evening from about 9pm. If the strongest winds were earlier I think we'd see a red warning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2016 12:56

Spartacus, it looks to remain as it is really, cooler perhaps at times, but remaining unsettled with perhaps the storms moving across the south by next weekend.

Perihelion · 01/02/2016 15:27

Wind's getting up now. Forth Road bridge is shut with gust of 84mph. Seagulls are struggling Grin

Perihelion · 01/02/2016 16:22

Amazing beautiful nacreous cloud to the west of Edinburgh now. Best I've seen. FR bridge open again to cars atm.

Ginfox · 01/02/2016 16:30

Hatches battened here in Western Isles, but so far nothing remarkable. Have cooked dinner early pre inevitable power cut, fire laid for when heating goes off. Varying reports as to when it is due to peak (some say around 6pm, some around midnight).

Stay safe everyone

GloriaSmud · 01/02/2016 18:35

Perihelion ~ DH came home and described this 'meteorological phenomenon' that I'd missed as the sun went down, and said that he and his work colleagues stood and watched it. He thinks someone took a picture and he's going to try and get them to e-mail it so I can take a look. The pictures I've seen on Google look really pretty.

OP posts:
Perihelion · 01/02/2016 23:19

Gloria if I can figure out technology (unlikely) I'll post a pic. Even with my shite phone camera, it looks amazing. Huge clouds lit up in mother of pearl iridescent colours and a wiggly rainbow at the bottom. There's photos of todays on the Netweather forum in the Scotland regional discussion. It's as lovely as an aurora Grin
Wind wise, just back from work and it's windy but not mental.

GloriaSmud · 02/02/2016 20:44

It would be lovely to see the picture, Perihelion! Just taken a look at the pictures on Netweather, there are some lovely ones there.
DH said it was mentioned on the national weather forecast at 6.30pm and it's made our local newspaper as well.

I'm so annoyed I missed it ~ I thought the light looked a bit strange about that time and sometimes when that happens, I'll go and take a look at the sun-setting but didn't on this occasion

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 02/02/2016 21:04

Thought I'd just post the current weather warnings.

There's also a really 'orrible looking storm showing for Sunday evening/overnight ~ strongest winds across Wales, the South, Midlands and Northern England. Probably one to keep an eye on for the moment.
