Perhaps for some people.... hail may develop, with greatest risk down the east coast I think.

I think theres the chance for more in Kent.

Any reports from Suffolk? The radar looked quite interesting an hour or two ago.

Feeling a bit thick after reading that Blush I'm not entirely sure what the low wet-bulb zero actually is...

ohyouBadBadkitten · 12/04/2012 18:29

It's the height at which the wet bulb temp is 0C. if that height is low it tends to indicate that the atmosphere is too stable to produce large hail. Hail needs unstable conditions to grow.

Wet bulb temp is all about the amount of moisture in the air. I could go into more detail if you like... Grin

Can you hear the sizzle of brain cells frying?

hugglymugly · 12/04/2012 20:10

Don't worry, Pascha, I keep trying to understand all the technical terms and have even accessed some basic courses on the subject. But the moment I think I've grasped a concept, it slides away from me. I shall have to dig out all that material and go through it again, and make more notes.

It doesn't help that when the wet-bulb or even the dry-bulb gets mentioned, I often get the little thought of "what bulb? - tulip?", which I suppose is a variation on seaweed. Grin

Last update from here: The sky eventually brightened and we've had a lovely end to the day. I can report that my nearest online weather station says that from lunchtime onwards we've had just over 9mm of rain, though I do wonder how accurate that is when the precipitation is in the form of hail.
