Also, perhaps a dumb question: if it snows does as much water get into the reservoirs as when it rains?

JKS - I guess the answer to your question maybe - perhaps not. In that when it snows and lays some is lost to evaporation before making it into the ground. I know that puddles get lost to evaporation too but where it lands on fields and what not I suspect more soaks in. could be talking bollocks though!
