when is it going to get colder?

Are we stuck in a blocking pattern again that gave us that long cold spell last winter? is it the same phenomenon?

Michael Fish on netweather explains here the sort of blocking we've got at the moment and says that it'll probably stay this way for the rest of the month.

I look on the met-monkey forum everyday and they're of the same opinion; that there's no sign of anything like winter while it's still November. They've got excited by the odd model run showing signs of winter starting in early December but nothing's certain; it all seems 'up in the air' (quite literally!) at the moment. Going by 'gut feeling' though, most seem to think it'll be December before anything cold comes our way.

Bah I want it cold!!!!! I hate that its so warm at this time of year, it should be cold oct, nov dec and half of jan, then it can become warmer and spring like.

Come the revolution I shall enforce this

we are heading to cumbria 19-23 , i need to know if it will be snowing and if i wont get there or get home! Help weather people

It was colder this time last year. Snow started in the coming week just after DSs birthday (22nd) and by the weekend there was a lot f it. Don't want snow but wouldn't mind a little more wintry temperatures

snow would make my journey to work nightmarish and i really dont want to sleep in my car....

and i don't want to have to put the heating on properly. I am thinking of all the money i am saving by not putting the heating on. got to save about £170 to recoup the insulation costs.

Looks like around the 27th conditions will cool down - becoming more average in the south. Maybe hill snow in the north????

The conditions controlling our weather are very differerent from last year at the moment - last winter we had a big high over Greenland steering the weather. This time its a big old high pressure over Europe.

I have a brand new snow shovel so we won't get snow.

(of course things may change and my above thoughts may well prove to be wrong)

no no snow please we go away 28th november for 5 days and we are meant to be moving 19th December long as house is finshed so this mild weather is helping .

thenc an snow once in but could it be cleared by the 2nd January for 5 days as have soem friends coming then it can do what it likes after that

It was definitely much colder this time last year. DH and DS went on a weekend camping trip in the snow (ds birthday treat ) and there was snow on the ground and at the campsite the public toilet was frozen solid. Ds did not take his all in one ski suit off all weekend.

Personally I reckon we will have more of this mild weather and then the cold will come and stay later into spring next year. may be totally wrong and have to eat my words

I can guarantee it will be a mild winter because I have:

Bought very expensive season passes for skiing
Bought skis, boots etc
Just about to buy snow tyres

Mind you, I think it is a price I don't mind paying for a mild winter!

No thank you. Absolutely no snow until after the 4th January. I will not tolerate it. Once I've had this baby it can snow for the rest of the year but not until then. Thank you.

I have already ordered requested a Christmas like we had (in the East Midlands) last year. Fairly cold/frosty for most of December, then heavy snow the night the children finished school (we were able to build a snowman the first day of the school holidays), and then snow staying on the ground over Christmas. I'd like it all gone by New Year's Eve though, as it's my Dad's 70th birthday and we're having a surprise party for him. Won't be a great party if people can't get to it!

we had our first frost of the winter last night. the water on top of the electricity substation froze and frost on the grass. we have managed without heating today though. perhaps because we are all running a temperature and are heating ourselves up nicely.

if we ever move, I will miss the roof weather station... freezes in the cold and cansee the drops of rain. it is too far down to see the rain on the path if it is light rain. I allow myself to put the heating on guilt free when the roof is frozen!
