The rain today in the south

I have no idea why the met office didnt give out warnings for today with very heavy rain leading to localised flooding.

We have had 25.5mm (an inch) of rain since this morning.

I got soaked to the skin cycling. (I knew it was going to be heavy rain but didnt appreciate that it would be so very heavy, perhaps the met office got caught out as well)

Barber in north London here, been bucketing since 3pm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2011 16:02

normally I'd defend the met office but I fear that you may be right to a certain extent. With the bournemouth airshow today, they really needed to get it right and they failed.

only just started in West London... about an hour ago but pretty heavy now (I can't measure like OYBBK - at work, not near a window and I don't have a test tube with graduated markings on it :o)

Please clear up for Monday, ds has a day at the farm booked!

Some flood pictures here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2011 17:47

ok back :) 36mm now and still raining. dd wasnt nearly as wet as I'd feared as a)shed had the sense to wear her waterproofs all day and b) the stable owner very kindly tumble dried their clothes for them half way through the day. (lovely lady!)

dramatic pictures! I'd gone to Reading this morning on the train for shopping (for a new rain coat amongst other things!) and abandoned the trip because I was too dripping wet to concentrate. I probably went over that flood in the pic Grin

think it is almost stopped. 37.5mm :) looking at the radar it looks to be round bedfordshire/cambridgeshire, heading into EA where you'll get heavy rain but probably not to the same extent.

other areas of heavy rain in the country too (like blackpool/liverpool) but again, in general not to the same extent but worth being aware that there are areas under warnings this evening. warnings

Flooding in Brussels too! I have rarely seen rain like it - and it rains a LOT in Belgium. A load of small kids on a holiday club outing had to get off my bus tonight. They were screaming! Most of them didn't even have jackets.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2011 19:25

bournemouth had 60mm in 6 hours. quite a lot really.

Must add that they were screaming when they got off the bus into the downpour, not that they had to get off the bus because they were screaming. It is still coming down now.

Tragic news from Belgium Sad

What is up with this effin weather? Will we ever have a summer again?

purplepidjin · 18/08/2011 22:39

Mate of mine watched the Stour burst it's banks this morning on his way to work (Southbourne) He had to be towed out of the "puddle" by a fire engine.

Wessex way was up to car window level

CastlePoint was shut because the carpark flooded, will see if I can find the pics of the Cooper Dean Roundabout under a couple of feet

Santander on Old Christchurch Road was closed when the basement flooded - I hope the safe's water proof as well as burglar proof Wink

Our garden was under water, you could canoe on the bottom bit, pond turned into a lake. DH wnet out to the village shop (by car) and said that he felt like a salmon returning to its spawning ground.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/08/2011 07:22

rushofblood :( that is awful, really awful.

5gomad. That is funny :)

We ended up with 37.5mm Sun is shining and it feels so different to yesterday.

Yes, 5 confirmed dead at Pukkelpop. Sad The footage on the local news was awful. When I left work at 5 yesterday the sky was black like night. My biggest worry was that I left my umbrella in the office. Those poor families.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/08/2011 09:35

oh :(

horrendous.
