Hekla

So it could be something, or nothing, but one for people interested in Icelands geological make up.

Was just about to do a post about this!

Worrying that this one doesn't seem to give much notice e.g. earthquakes, before blowing!
But in case it does, we can watch it on this webcam and there's another volcano blog here.

And for those who want to be scared shitless witless, there's the Daily Wail!

I was first, I was first!! Grin

I was only first because I was trying to avoid mop up duty. We are in the midst of out 2nd sickness bug in 2 months and I had been up the last two times, so it was DH's turn!

There is always something happening in Iceland!

Grin (I'm supposed to be icing DD1's birthday cake and shouldn't be on here!)

I'm looking at that webcam and trying to work out whether that's a plume of steam or just cloud around the top of the volcano!

Hope everyone feels better soon.

mankyscotslass · 07/07/2011 10:42

I know, I got obsessive about it last time!

I should be getting ready for work now but would rather be on here!

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 07/07/2011 10:43

I thnk it's just the cloud.

here

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 07/07/2011 10:59

Darn that cloud!

We've got a family friend on a cruise to Iceland at the moment. I so want to interrogate ask her all about it when she gets back!

GloriaSmud · 07/07/2011 11:01

And this current unrest reminds me, did you see that Katla had a good few earthquakes one Friday, 2 or 3 weeks ago. All the blogs thought that was 'it' for that one then!

GloriaSmud · 07/07/2011 11:11

Another blog here mentions new sensors around the volcano that make movement a bit difficult to interpret.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2011 10:38

oooh, will have a good luck in a mo.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2011 10:49

ooooo, etna is being all grumpy. I love etna :)
Good rant about news reporting about Hekla in bigthink Grin worth keeping an eye on it but as he says, we don't know what the signs mean yet.....

mankyscotslass · 08/07/2011 11:08

I thought his rant was really funny too. Grin

Etna is very grumbly at the moment!

GloriaSmud I've save the link to that blog, thanks!

Has it all gone quiet for now? Another rant about the media hype yesterday here!

GloriaSmud · 04/08/2011 12:45

Have you seen this, manky (and other Icelandic volcano fans!)
Interesting quake at Hekla about an hour ago.

mankyscotslass · 04/08/2011 12:48

I'm just looking at the site and the blog now. Smile

I'm not sure if it's still too deep to indicate an imminent eruption, but I think things may be on the move. There are lots of bits of info on that blog about inflation/deflation at Hekla!

Just when things had been a bit quieter in South Iceland too. Grin

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 04/08/2011 13:28

I never realised that Hekla is generally seismically quiet until just before an eruption....maybe there is something going on?

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 04/08/2011 14:08

Kind of makes it a rather dangerous one because whereas other volcanoes start ramping up with their earthquakes over days/weeks, Hekla starts rocking and rolling something like 60-90 minutes before blowing!

GloriaSmud · 10/08/2011 17:41

Something I've always wondered about; what is the 'dalek' thing on the Hekla webcam? Someone's found out and done a Google translation! (from the Icelandic volcano blog)

?Burféll is an about 700 meters high mountain. At the top of the mountain Fjarski has put telecommunications facilities, RUV got permission to bring a camera directed at the volcano Hekla, which is 12 km. south-east of Burféll. Hekla is nearly 1500 m. high and usually erupts at intervals of decades. Probably in the near future Hekla will erupt, as well as the big sister, Katla. Hekla erupted last 26th February 2000.
Safety Committee RUV did the installation of the Burféll camera in collaboration with Civil Defence, LV, and fiber-optic Fjarski Reykjavik suplying connection to the system.?

So the 'dalek' is working in telecommunications!

I've always wondered what it was!

Katla seems restless gain at the moment too.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 10/08/2011 19:42

Yes, Katla does seem to be a restless individual at the moment! The guy who writes the blog thought that something was going to happen yesterday but so far though the only excitement has been that they've moved the webcam view slightly to the left and put some sort of 'marker' thing in the foreground!

mankyscotslass · 10/08/2011 19:51
Grin

They did get a bit excited about the marker didn't they.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 22/01/2012 11:48

Looks like there's been one or two earthquakes actually in the volcano over the last few days.
