So as I understand it, the area was volcanic thousands/millions of years ago, has had a long period of nothing and could now be starting up again? Not so great for the cities in that area though if that's the case!

That's my understanding too, there is evidence of magma under NYC millions of years ago, the theory is the region may, or may not be becoming active again.

Of course this will likely take millenia to happen!
