Weather

A change in weather for a good while yet - wet and potentially very windy

This week will see a return to weather more reminiscent of winters in the recent past - Instead of the weather being dominated by a cold north/Europe it is going to be dominated by Atlantic weather systems. Wet and at times very windy with signals that severe gales may occur.

At the moment it looks pretty nasty for the end of the week for northern Scotland with widespread gales elsewhere. Pretty wet and wind in the run up too.

I noticed the metmonkey messageboarders were talking about gales for next weekend yesterday. What happened to the long, really cold winter that everyone said was going to happen?

it blew away Petunia Grin it is quite a startling change. I reckon its cos everyone went and bought snow shovels and sledges and stuff. Looks like a winter of two halves.

have to say, northern scotland looks quite probably snowy later in the week rather than rainy. Blizzard conditions up there therefore.

Countryfile's weather forecast on Sunday said that there was going to be blizzards for the north~western/Scottish bits of the country, later in the week. But I was a bit surprised when the TV forecast yesterday then said rain and gales for them instead. So is it back to snow for them then?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2011 11:58

its borderline Petunia - certainly the hills will have snow, the question is, how far will it penetrate to lower levels?

So, are we due any more snow at all, or is it all finished now?

We are in the East Midlands by the way.

Cupoftea ~ I'm in the East Midlands as well and my gut feeling is that we're done for snow for now. I'll be disappointed as well if that's really the end of our chance of snow this winter; we've got weeks left before it's officially Spring and I don't want those weeks to be filled with dull, cloud~filled days, possibly combined with wind and rain!

I'm not willing to call it done with yet as I dont do long term forecasts. some of the models are still showing the occasional very cold run so we shall see....
