Weather

why on earth is the BBC forecast so different from everyone else?

BBC keep banging on about large snowfall in the South East tonight (on tv, they're saying something different online) but metcheck, accuweather and netweather are all saying light flurries or nothing at all. I know our weather is hard to predict but it's only 12 hours away we're talking about. Hardly long range.

Have just looked at the met office and they have upgraded their warnings for lots of snow later today 3-8 cm with up to 15cm in places. That was not there a couple of hours ago when I checked Xmas Shock

headfairy · 20/12/2010 12:29

Maybe everyone's in the process of updating too... they're really piling on the drama on BBC News channel about how much snow there will be in the SE, John Hammond just said 15-20cms in Surrey. We've already got 10cms so should be fun. Got family flying in to Gatwick on Tuesday but that looks increasingly unlikely.

No idea, but to be fair they are nothing to do with the BBC, they are just an outlet for info from the UK's Met Office (who provide the forecasters too).

MegGriffin · 20/12/2010 12:32

Whilst I love the snow I feel so sorry for the families who may not be where they want to be at christmas.
I am in West Sussex and have Mr Tesco coming on the 23rd and I am now wondering if I should go up town and start buying bits just in case.

Live in SE (Berks) Is this all going to be clear by Xmas Eve - got one family member flying in to Gatwick and three others travelling by Road from Manchester/
Liverpool. Will they get here......

FlightoftheCrimbleTree · 20/12/2010 14:29

The met office site is down atm.

They all seem to say different things. The met office even had a thing on it earlier saying 'we honestly don't know what's going to happen with this snow' which I thought was at least honest Grin

PocketMouse · 20/12/2010 14:32

All of the ones I look at are different from each other, AND changing all the time. I've got an app on my phone which is constantly updating, and it's saying different things every half hour, it's ridiculous

so not only are we supposed to contend with this weather, but we're also not allowed to know what's going to happen where?

BBC is the met office weather forecast.

I also use the weather channel site.

For our area the met office has been most accurate int he last week or so, but it can often be very much hit and miss.

BigTillyMincepie · 20/12/2010 15:59

Glad it's not just me - the BBC is the least accurate forecast of them all!

ATM met office is showing severe weather warning for London and SE, but BBC says no snow for London in next 24 hrs.

Which one should I believe?

domesticsluttery · 20/12/2010 16:34

They all seem to keep changing their minds.

I checked the met office site this morning and it didn't seem too bad for us except for the ice (mid Wales) but now we are coloured in orange with flash warnings and advisories.

It is already snowing heavily again about 5 miles up the road. We have 6-8" of frozen snow on the ground, temperatures haven't risen above freezing all day. It was -10 when I took the DC to school this morning.

I really hope that the met office are wrong and it manages to somehow miss us.

Megletitsnow · 20/12/2010 16:36

We're meant to get 6cm of snow according to the MET office, but the BBC is showing 'Mist' Hmm.

FWIW we've had 1cm so far in North Hampshire. Where has it all gone?

Megletitsnow · 20/12/2010 16:41

I've just looked at the Uk Snow Map page and it just seems to be snowing in Reading. No great dumping in the South East according to that Confused.

MegGriffin · 20/12/2010 17:38

Snowing in West Sussex now.

headfairy · 20/12/2010 18:08

dh says it's snowing in Redhill now... it's creeping north.

Snowing heavily in West Kent right now for last 20mins or so.

BigTillyMincepie · 20/12/2010 20:00

Not snowing in SE22, though there was a little dusting earlier.
