On the M6 toll. Within the space of 10 mins the temperature dropped by 5 degrees then it started raining very heavily, turned to thick sleet then soft hail (graupel I think) then snow! Very dramatic!

Yay!!!! very cool :)
I think all we had was heavy rain and then sleet(I was walking in it) then somewhere between me going inside and coming out (I was in a building where I couldnt weather watch) it turned much colder and fresher.

mychatnickname · 16/12/2010 16:59

I think we had it too. Now turned to snow.

shinyshoesandglitterypoos · 16/12/2010 18:06

I had no idea that was graupel but yes we had that. I went haring off to the shops to get some bread just in case as it appeared to be settling, but it stopped :(

Have to go see some friends I'm not keen on tomorrow so I'm hoping overnight we'll get six inches (I hope for this most nights actually, but DH doesn't always wake up). Grin

missnevermind · 16/12/2010 18:15

Oooh we had that, I was stood out in it. Shopping, not just playing at being a scarecrow!
Really interesting weather at the mo.
A graupel heyy.

FoundWanting · 16/12/2010 22:00

We had some! I tried to phone DH so I could use my new word but couldn't get him. Then I got a text from DH saying "It's graupelling here."

Thanks for expanding our vocabulary, OYSSK.

I have just expanded mine and dh's vocabulary.

piratecatClaus · 16/12/2010 22:26

none here in south devon BUT i now know that the freak downpour we had 2 yrs back in summer was probably graupel. It was the weirdest thing, one minute the day was normal, not hot at all,(it was the crap summer) sort of cloudy and yet mild. Then we came out of a shop and my god this stuff was falling like rain, and it went cold.

Within 5-10 mins it looked like the whole of the high street has been snowed on! cars heaped up with it.

Hassledge · 16/12/2010 22:27

We had a bit of graupel earlier. Now we have on and off snow (East Anglia).

Lexilicious · 16/12/2010 22:28

I've been telling people at work about graupel. They were all trying to be cool and uninterested (blokes) and then one of them said oh maybe that why the TWR (military/RAF weather conditions codes for hail is 'GR'. And I grinned. I have still lost all my street cred though.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 16/12/2010 22:29

ooooo pirate your post reminds me of a time in Zimbabwe, in the middle of summer when they had a bizarre hail storm (very unusual). Within minutes it looked like it had snowed as everything was white - was very very strange........have a photo somewhere of it and it's so wierd to look at this white African summers day

piratecatClaus · 17/12/2010 07:03

Baroquin, yes it was so strange, even stranger for you though!

We came out of Woolies (rip) in our flip flops and were battling up the street on this ice!

teddies · 17/12/2010 07:34

I'd quite like to have woken up to six inches, har har har.
