Will it affect our weather pattern this autumn/winter/sprng?

And if so what impact will the Jet Stream have on it?

I was watching an interesting programme on the February 2008 tornado break out in Arkansas and Tenesse. It seemed to suggest a link between the location and strength of the tornadoes and La Nina and the Jet Stream.

What do you think could happen here?

La Nina years have a reputation for being stormy.

Most weather people seem to think that this will be a -nao (negative north atlantic oscillation when there isn't much pressure difference between Iceland and the Azores) winter again, last years was a -noa.

-noa winters tend to not be stormy in the UK, storms head south. We end up much more under the influence of the continent rather than the Atlantic.

My guess (and it is purely a complete and total guess) is that -noa beats la nina for the UK because I think that the noa has a greater influence on our weather than la nina.

so - I think my conclusion is that we are more likely to end up with a cold dominated winter rather than a mild stormy atlantic dominated winter. Who knows, we might end up with a mix and end up with gargantuan levels of snow (unlikely)

The programme last night was fascinating!

I should have watched it! which channel was it on?

It was NG Discovery HD.

They were looking at research into the tornado breakout that February.

They also found that, as a general pattern the Jet Stream was moving north by about 2 kilometers per year, which is why some of the larger tornadoes were forming further out of the central tornado alley, and has implication for disater planning for some fairly major cities.
