How old? Purees? Otherwise well?

FionaSH · 07/07/2010 13:24

7.5mo. Lumpy purees, 3 meals a day plus snacks usually, all demolished with gusto. He had an op 2.5 weeks ago which caused allsorts of milk based issues, but the solids intake didnt falter. Could it be tetthing??? Isn't everything put down to teething?

Oh yes, that's why I recognise your name. Remember the op problems. Could be anything. Teething, a cold brewing, just not hungry. Have you tried something cold in case it's teething? Cold flannel to chew on and then offer? Perhaps some teething gel on his gums and then try again? Perhaps put some soft fruit in front of him and see if he helps himself. It's very common for them to become a bit independent too and not like being spoon fed. Have you tried giving him a loaded spoon to do it himself?

Is his milk intake still problematic?

FWIW, dd never wanted solids when teething. Refused them point blank. Same when she had a cold or sore throat. We didn't puree though.

also, he realises that he can refuse, if he wants to...he is trying to assert some control.

I would just leave it for a couple of days - he will not starve and it will diffuse the control issue.

He will pick up on any anxiety you may have, and think "Okaaay, this is a way to control a situation" - NOT in a bad way, but in an "I really am a separate person from mummy - WOW!" kind of way..iyswim..

thanks guys - I think my gut feel is its an independence thing....he has a bit of a glint in his eye!!! I'll try giving him a spoon and see what he makes of that.

Milk intake is all over the place - he has gone back on the boob for a morning feed(thank god, no more syringing!!!) and he has also taken really quickly to using a beaker - so I'm less panicky about him getting dehydrated... now the solids are out the window! What I wouldn't give for everything to come together - just for a day!!!!!!!!!!
