dc is nearly 9 months and basically has never eaten we have tried carrots, potato, apple, pear, misc fruit pot, misc fruit squeezy packet, bread sticks, rusks, yog, rice cakes, broc, and probably a bit more.

we've tried spoon and fingers (both his and mine)

he grabs my hand and thrusts it away, purses lips and clamps mouth shut, turns his head.

if any food gets in he makes a face, spits it out gags and vomits i mean really vomits every time even wth the smallest amoount of yog on my finger

never had any problem with older sisters
def growing well
we don't bother with the HV (usually we don't have one on the odd occasion i saw one with sisters it was more than useless!)

anyone have any advice?
thanks

I would take him to the GP and ask about getting his tonsils checked for size and tongue checked to check he isn't tongue tied.

I've never heard of a baby that old not being to eat any food and gagging on it etc but maybe others have?

Dfro rule out physiological factors first though.

luciemule · 26/06/2010 22:21

That should have read 'defo' not dfro!

thanks
thought we'd got somewhere tonight when some carrot disappeared however 10 minutes later massive vomiting (vomiting is usually immediately though)
will try and get appointment with GP

hi

i just posted a similar post and then saw yours but my DD is just over 7 months. we are under paeds for reflux and they dont know why she wont eat but have referred us to speech and language who deal with swallowing probs in infants (not sure when we'll get to see them) so maybe could get your gp to refer you? maybe your dc has an overactive gag reflex? what about really really thin purees like a milkshake consistency? sorry rushed post!

GColdtimer · 30/06/2010 14:22

bumping for my SIL who has similar problems Her DS is sleeping dreadfully too because he isn't bf in the day very much either. He is 8 months and has never really eaten anything.

Any other thoughts? Thanks

GColdtimer · 02/07/2010 07:49

Anyone?

Igglybuff · 02/07/2010 07:51

Could you try feeding in a different setting - not in high chair, perhaps sitting in a bouncy chair/bumbo and casually have some food to play with? Make it relaxed etc etc and see if he'll have a play?

SoBloodyTired · 02/07/2010 07:59

I second making it relaxed. We did baby led weaning which meant he only really started to take food when he wanted to, and it was only at 9 months that he started to have anything much at all. Food is for fun before 1, milk provides all the nutrition required. If you can remember that and just chuck bits of whatever you.re having on the highchair tray and try to let him get on with it he might relax into it. I think when we get worried and up tight it.s too easy to find ourselves pushing things in their wee faces and pressurising them. There's a great baby led weaning forum which will be full of hand tips about this sort of problem, posting from phone or would link you.

Thanks all still no eating here althoughdid sucka breadstick which is a massive improvement!!
we've fed everywhere, in highchairs on floor alone next to friends etc etc

no pressure (that I'm aware of try twice then leave it try pretty much every day usually early in the day lots of food to play with)

interestingly no problem in putting paper, leaves, plastic, toys clothes etc etc in mouth (don't leave plastic around obv. but you know what they're like reach out and grab any passing object!)

I really must shift myself down to the GP to discuss, they are jsut soooooo hard to get an appointment with!

Hi daysoftheweek

this sounds really unusual and i'd def get some professional advice.

Sounds like you are doing all you can so time to ask the experts.

I've never heard of a baby so young to refuse like that.

Best of luck xx

Hattie05 · 04/07/2010 04:46

What happens if you put him in high chair at the families meal time with the same food you are all eating in front of him. Will he pick it up at all?

Does he pick toys up and put them to his mouth?

Hattie05 · 04/07/2010 04:47

sorry just seen that he does put everything else in mouth!

GColdtimer · 05/07/2010 11:29

Thanks everyone, the same for my SIL She has tried finger foods and purees, has just left food around for him to experiment with, has fed him with them at dinner, in his pushchair, etc - even tried him with a rusk in the bath! But nothing gets eaten.

Inthink she will probably see a doctor too to rule out anything physical and then carry on offering him food in a non-pressurised way. Her mad friend told her to force feed him but she is obviously not going to do that!
