Mum gave DS ice cream this aft while she was looking after him, just 2 tiny mouthfuls aparently but am inwardly seething as we're literally on day 5 of solids..... Am following annabel karmel (not sure if she's frowned upon on here but am finding it useful......) and he's been enjoying the food so far..... Should I panic, could it have done him any harm (he seems fine) or should I just let it go and tell mum I'm not happy with her doing it in future.....

He will be fine, just ask your mum not to give him any in future.

DON'T PANIC (as they say in Hitch hikers which you are probably too young to know about)

babyOcho · 24/06/2010 19:41

What kind of ice cream was it? If it was a decent one there's no harm. I would be a bit concerned however if it was a Mr Whippy.

I would try not to panic, hard not to at this age, but it's fine and it's done now. Tell your mother why you don't want your DS eating ice cream yet, explain to her why you dont want him eating ice cream.

Besom · 24/06/2010 19:41

Nothing to panic about but you need to have a word with your mum.

smallorange · 24/06/2010 19:44

Good quality ice cream isn't anything to worry about - no harm done.

LutyensCBA · 24/06/2010 19:50

I see your ice cream and raise you five teaspoons of strong tea given to dd when she was 3 months old. This was my FIL, by the way....my mum is scared stiff of me and would never dare to do such a thing

It's ok, no harm done. Just have a calm word with your mum to run things by you before trying out new foodstuffs with your ds. No guarantee that she'll listen though!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 24/06/2010 20:07

It won't have done him any harm (DD's first solid food was actually ice cream as DH was holding an ice cream in one hand and her in the other arm and she did an almighty open-mouthed lunge... )

Just have a calm word with your mother.

MrsMc82 · 25/06/2010 21:21

Phew! Thank you everyone!! X

lutyens... i see your sips of tea and raise you sips of beer and cidar!! and that was my other half, not parents and inlaw!! i was furious, thats just a bit unnecessary.

mrs mc... i think the issue is with mother not respecting your wishes as an adult, rather than the icecream. my parents did that to us when we were living near them, we told them we didn't want the kids having junk food all the time, and thats all they seemed to offer them. all we got was a 'what? we can't even offer them an icecream now???'. it was tiring, and disrespectful. we moved. hopefully you can work things out with your mum and come to an understanding. xo

Can I just throw in a few sips of champagne at my DT's christening from my MIL? 'Its alright cos I used a clean teaspoon'.

stressheaderic · 28/06/2010 16:29

I agree that it's def not one of the recommended foods at 5 mo...but what's all the panic for? All this "he will be fine"...of course he'll be fine, why wouldn't he be?

I let DD, 4 mo, have a few little licks of ice-cream off my finger on Sat when it was roasting and she loved it. Certainly not something I'd do all the time, but nothing to call social services over, surely.

Jamosie · 28/06/2010 16:42

potplant.. thats hilarious! MIL's are funny.

Mumsnut · 28/06/2010 16:43

Chocolate buttons. Thanks Mum.

potplant · 28/06/2010 18:06

I wasn't laughing at the time. I was a bit more mental anxious about my pfbs at the time.
I was NOT happy.

OP - you will laugh at this one day!

pinkdaisies · 28/06/2010 20:17

Yep, MIL's can be terrible. I have to watch mine like a hawk. All she wants to do is feed my 7 month DS random- and dangerous- food:

sugary tea from an egg cup
whole grapes
peanuts(!!!!!)- got there in time. Phew.
treacle pudding
chinese food.

Seriously. She thinks I'm a miserable cow because I keep having a go about it all. Her comment was "babies aren't a new invention."

chiefcook · 28/06/2010 22:59

My dad's mum gave me jelly at 2 months... I don't think my Mum ever recovered from that! (Granny is a mum of 9 children)

BUT I reached 34 with no ill effects

gizzy1973 · 01/07/2010 09:49

well my ds is 24 weeks and so far as well as normal purees he has had
ice cream twice
jelly
sip of coke - dh
bread
eggs
strawberries
water out of my glass

he seems fine and unhurt and yes he is my first and maybe i am far too laid back

StealthPolarBear · 01/07/2010 09:53

DD's first food might have been a chocolate button - DS had some and all of a sudden she had chocolate round her face Am hoping itwas just his hands! We were teaching him to share but i never thought he'd share chocolate!

amimagic · 01/07/2010 16:34

MIL gave ice cream and choc buttons to ds when small. Dd had just recently started solids and she asked me to wait in her house while she went to
the shop for buttons! That's how I found out what she'd fed ds when I wasn't around.
