5month old on purees want to include blw

Ok, so 2 weeks ago after much deliberation (and prof "I didn't say this but...") we started DS on purees and he loves it. I really wanted to go down the BLW route and I think he'd like it too, but he still can't sit upright unassisted (we use a bumbo atm). So my question is, can I introduce finger foods now, or should I wait until he can sit on his own? Also he's been gobbling the purees, if he goes onto blw now and he stops eating so much, will I effectively be starving him?

Is there are a reason why you started weaning early?

Milk is the main source of nutrition before 1. If you stopped giving purees, he would not starve providing you were still giving him milk (breast/formula).

He was taking huge feeds every couple of hours and even then he would happily stay on there grazing. I mentioned this to 2 healthcare profs who both said (unofficially) that it was probably time to wean. When he had his first spoonful he swallowed it straight off then opened his mouth for more, so I figured they were right. He still wants feeding every couple of hours though, esp at night
I agree that milk is all they need nutrionally, but if it's not filling him up then surel it's time for something more substantial...i'm not saying I'm right, but this is my logic.

I thought that once you start weaning you shouldn't stop...is this wrong?

jemjabella That is not helpful! 5 months is not early, as recommandations have changed to between 4 and 6 months if baby is ready.
I would wait for finger food untill your DS shows signs of bitting and chewing (is it call gumming?). If he is you can try food which melt for starter, and go with the flow. he will BLW soon. If he still has plenty of milk he won't starve. but he might miss the purees if he likes them so much, and get upset that he can't eat the finger food.
Good luck

Not at all an expert but i think it is best to wait until they can sit more or less unsupported before introducing BLW. I didn't start weaning til 6 mth but did do purees alongside BLW for first couple of weeks.

DD gradually lost interest in the purees and just wanted the real food so now that is what she gets.

You could start offering him something relatively inocuous like cucumber sticks and see if he takes it. BLW book says they're ready once they start grabbing your food, so trying eating with him on your lap and see what happens.

the point of BLW is that if the can do it if they are ready to do it. So I would offer finger food and see what happens.
