Is it time to wean ?? Can I BLW before 6 months ?

DS is 23 weeks and is around 23 lbs. He has been taking 8 x 8oz bottles in 24 hours for the last couple of weeks. Up until then he was ebf'd but I really struggled to keep up with him (feeding at best 2 hourly day and night - often more).

I wanted to wait for 6 months and do BLW but he really seems like he needs more now. When he drains his 8 oz bottle, he cries for more. He is having almost double the "recommended" daily amount for his age.

Can I do BLW now or would I be better starting with purees and a few finger foods now and moving on to full BLW in a few weeks. His co-ordination is good, his tongue reflex has gone but he's not sitting up completely on his own yet (slumps in his high chair but ok in a bumbo).

Please help !

Thanks

both my dc did blw at 5 months. If they can pick it up themselves, get it in their mouth on their own and swallow it then they are ready for it. MIne could both do this at 5 months. As long as you don't put it in their mouth or hand for them then it is ok. here will be others who disagree with me though!

Put some sticks of veg in front of him and see what he does. If he picks it up, chews and swallows then he's probably ready. Milk will remain the main source of nutrition for a while though so don't be surprised by him continuing to take a lot of milk.

It's exhausting isn't it? The Tank didn't go longer than 2hrs until 7/8 months, usually more frequent and often every 20 mins. She was 26lbs at 28 weeks when she finally showed an interest in food. I can't even begin to imagine it with another child and dsd too.

He's such a lovely boy. And is growing up so fast. Surely he was only born last week?

Thanks both. I think I will get one of those bumbo trays until he's stable enough for the highchair and give him a go with some bits and bobs. He swiped some of my cream cake when he was sitting on my lap last week. I suspect chocolate choux buns are not the best first foods

SOH - it is exhausting. Its been the longest 6 months of my life. He is lovely though
