I am having problems trying to get my sons eating rountine right. He is nearly 7 months old and i am sure he is still having too much milk. When do i begin to reduce the amount? He is on 9oz of milk with every meal (usually 4tsp porridge, veg. fruit etc) and one in the evening before bed. I have been giving him his bottle before his food, is this correct? Or should i leave an interval between them. I'm a first time mum and starting to think im making a right mess of this...

When did you start weaning ?

katylou25 · 27/07/2005 21:08

My DS (6 months) dropped a bottle by himself when started weaning and now has 4 7 oz bottles BETWEEN meals, therefore he eats more solids, and requires less milk, think they should be starting to drop down towards the pint mark between now and a year and taking majority of calories from food. DS has bottle on waking about 7 ish, breakfast 3/4 of a weetabix at 8.30ish, bottle at 10.30, lunch, main and pud at 12.30 bottle at 2.30, snack - breadstick, baby biscuit, or fruit slices at 4ish, tea main and pud at 6 and bottle at bedtime 7 -7.30. Looking at it like that he eats a lot but has always been a bit fussy with milk and LOVED solids from beginning - first try he ate a WHOLE banana and there was me expecting him to spit it straight out!

Milk should still be the main part of their diet until they're one I thought?

katylou25 · 27/07/2005 21:09

OOPs meant to say I lot of people I know, give a taster of milk before meal to satisfy the hunger and then give solids before reoffering the bottle. Dont know if this might help you??

bobbybob · 28/07/2005 01:34

I was told milk before solids until 9 months and then after meals from then. This could be complete rubbish as it was from a HV, but it seemed to work for us. As I bfed there was quite a gap as I didn't fancy covering myself in sweet potato puree.

Until a year old, I think they need to have between 17 and 27 oz in a day. That's pretty easy to attain.

Windermere · 28/07/2005 09:18

At that age I was giving ds 6.5 oz before breakfast, 6.5 oz at about 2.30pm and 8oz before bed.

angelcake, from another first time mum what you say sounds quite normal. DS is a bit older (coming up for 9 months) and has only just (since last week) gone down to 3 bottles a day.

He has 3 7oz bottles, 1 at 7ish before breakfast, one after lunch at about 1.30 -2pm and one at bedtime - 7-7.30pm, after tea at 5.30pm. HTH.

Thanks everyone, i do feel reassured about my weaning/feeding pattern now. I am in the process of trying to convert DS from bottle to beaker at the moment. I don't think he is really ready for it, although i can tell he is dying to get hold of the spoon and try feeding himself!
I have just ordered a baby and toddler meal planner book so hopefully that will keep me on the right track.

good on you for trying to get him on a beaker, my DD is 9 months and wont go near a cup, I try all the time but she only wants a bottle.

I'm trying to wean my 11 month old daughter onto formula at the moment. She'll happily have it in her food these days but she will not have a bottle or beaker with it in, despite the fact she will have a little juice out of a beaker. The other day I read that up to 1 year old, they are supposed to be on between 24-36oz of milk a day! I'm hoping it was a typo! My son was on exactly 36oz at that age but I thought it was because he was having a growth spurt, plus he was always a pig! I'm lucky if my daughter accepts 30 minutes of breastmilk and as I have trouble expressing and with my daughters reluctance to go onto teats of any sort, I haven't a clue how much shes getting, but I doubt its anything near that amount, even with 5oz a day in her food!

Hi PS i weaned dd onto formula at 8 months but it wasnt easy. It wasnt the formula so much as the bottles. because i had exclusively bf with not much expressing it was like i was introuducing an alien thing to her and she point blank refused them from me. The crying and upset was awful! i also worried she wasnt getting any where near enough milk. but just had to perservere as i was going back to work. I gave her a very milky porridge breakfast and then kept offering her the bottles. In the end she took them as i guess there was no alternative. but it was all of a sudden she decided she wanted them. Have you tried just leaving the bottle on the high chair and letting her have a go when she wants...
