Is this amount of poo on solids normal?

My DD is 6.5mths and started on solids 6 mks ago at my HV's advice due to extreme feeding through the night. She's taken to it well, but she is pooing quite hard poos throughout the day, often 6-10 times per day.

The odd time she cries and it seems to bother her if a stool is particularly hard, but generally she seems unphased. Each time she has a movement the amount that comes out is relatively small and very formed / quite dry.

Is this normal, or constipation? She's still BF 6 times per day, and takes small sips from a sippy cup during meals.

Not sure if it is normal or not but you could be describing my DD! She is 6.5 months, started on solids 3 weeks ago and her poo is exactly as you describe.

I think that sounds normal. Well my DS was like that too..if ppoing that many times a day does not sound like constipation...

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 22:07

sounds like she needs more water

Hard rabbit pellet poos suggest that she's constipated. If you google there are pictures of this if you're not sure.

my dd became constipated as soon as solids were introduced. she was ebf prior to this which i continues during weaning and i failed to recognize that water should have been given as a drink as wekk. she suffered with constipation until approx 6 yrs so this is definately worth nipping in the bud- give more water.

Is she eating a lot of banana? It can really bung them up at this age, try giving citrus fruit (clementine, kiwi) instead maybe?

We made sure our baby had water afterwards and that made a great difference. We did it for ages, from spooning water in the beginning and we didn't suffer like that again.

My DS is exactly the same at the mo. I am trying to give more water - but he is no that interested. I was told though that ripe banana can help? Prunes are also supposed to be good - but have not tried that yet.

DD did exactly the same for the first 10 days after solids were introduced. She was still fully BF and had water too. They weren't rabbit pellets though - more like Toblerone chunks (and no, I've not been able to eat that brand of chocolate since).

Anyway, after 10 days or so we got nostalgic for the hard poo days. I suspect it's just the adjustment to solids - our GP certainly said it's very common when we saw her about something else.
