Vitamin drops or not?

I am currently weaning my 7.5 month old, who is EBF and is mostly BLW (aside from Ready Brek and the odd few spoonfuls of soup), as he is not a big fan of being fed! He is not eating a massive amount yet.

I have read that I should be giving him vitamin drops as he will not be getting enough nutrients from food and BF alone - can anyone tell me how true this actually is and if so which brand of vitamin drops are best?

I have been indecisive about this so far as the supplements I have seen in Boots are all sickly orange sweet stuff a la Calpol...

Thanks in advance

The vitamin drops are a subject of much discussion! (well they are at local baby groups )

The general consensus is that the only vitamin you may need them for is Vitamin D, but as were coming into summer and the sun is actually shining (woo!) as long as your out and about with DS then that should be fine!

If you DO decide to use them then careful as 1 brand (sorry cant remember whoich and it may be more then 1!) uses peanut oil

spoke to my HV today and she said that as long as baby is having a balanced diet and having lots of breastmilk no NEED for vits.. but that DOH do recommend.. so I have bought some anyway to use from time to time.. think I just bought Boots own and also bought Boots own omega 3 (though don't know if that is recommended)

I agree that a balanced diet should be enough. I don't feel that there seems to have much emphasis put on under 5's needing extra vitamins by the DOH though. Crikey - this is the developed world, our children are doing a lot better than about half the population of the world!!

However, I live in Cardiff, and the welsh Assembly has decided that they will fund the Vitamin tablets for all children here (up to 4.5yrs old), and look at the results before deciding whether to pay for them for the rest of Wales. So only time will tell (but I still won't be having any)

not - its for the vit d because of the rise in cases of rickets. just get outside everyday!

and eat these foods

(apparently - not vitamin expert!)
