Babies & Salt

Just wondering exactly how much salt per day is acceptable for an 8-month old, and how to calculate the "salt" content if the label only has the sodium amount? Thanks

Would cheese be considered too salty at this age? (I was surprised to see how much salt is in there!)

I never calculated it for either of mine. I just stopped using salt in cooking and avoided too much gravy. Although mil seemed to have a problem with this

They're both fine now. I think cheese would be fine.

The daily recommended maximum for children depends on their age (you need to multiply sodium content by 2.5 to get the salt content e.g. 0.4g sodium = 1g of salt):

Babies need only a very small amount of salt ? less than 1g (0.4g sodium) a day up to 12 months

?1 to 3 years ? 2g salt a day (0.8g sodium)
?4 to 6 years ? 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
?7 to 10 years ? 5g salt a day (2g sodium)
?11 and over ? 6g salt a day (2.4g sodium)

p.s. I would give an 8 month old cheese. DD loved anything with cheese sauce on it.

I didn't calculate either. Home cooking, no added salt, limiting anything salty like cheese (though still gave it, dd loved and loves it).

It's less than a gram a day iirc but a healthy, balanced diet shouldn't contain that much salt anyway.

Does anyone actually know what 1g of salt looks like? 1/2 teaspoon? Less? More?

Seona1973 · 07/03/2010 15:37

is a teaspoon-full not about 5g so 1g will be a fifth of a teaspoon?

That's great, thanks a million for the replies (and apologies for accidentally posting the question twice )
