Drinking only 20-25 oz, 4 month old daughter

I don't think my daughter would ever exceed drinking more than 20-25 oz of milk, is that okay? anyone have a child like that and grew up healthy? My daughter is 4 months old. I think she will be drinking the same amount even when she's 6, 8, or even one years old. She's drinking this much with forcefeeding otherwise it'll just be 16-17 oz.

what do you mean by 'forcefeeding'?

a general rule of thumb for amounts of milk per day is approx babies weight x 2.5 ounces.

i think if you're having to forcefeed your baby, you need to get some further, more specialist advice from a health visitor/midwife or your GP.

She will refuse the milk and I will keep making attempts to give her and finally she will give in and start sucking on the bottle and i will hold it firm, but not so hard that she will choke on it. I will attempt to give her as much as possible until she really shoves the bottle away. I did take my daughter to a doctor and he said she has reflux and prescribed her medication. He wasn't too concerned with her because she was gaining weight. But she's gaining weight because of me putting so much effort. She also had a barium ultrasound done.

If that's the case my daughter should be drinking 35 oz.

if her reluctance to feed is persisting after taking reflux meds, you need to be firm about investigating this problem.

GERD can cause feeding aversions and should be looked into.

have you tried all the more obvious things like experimenting with types of milk/bottles, feeding her in different positions etc?

Natheen · 14/02/2010 02:17

Yes we tried many things. Could it be perhaps just mood swings? I've taken her to the doc and hospital many times.

when did it start? has she always been this way?

what do the doctors say? is reflux their only diagnosis? do you have any other concerns about her besides feeding ie is she dewveloping as you would expect?

there is a 'feed the world' topic on MN- have you tried posting there?

My Dd1 was the same and we tried everything. Same with solids. She now eats like a trouper at aged 4 but never took the guideline amount of anything till at least 2.5. It was very stressful but she always gained weight well.

DD2 is the same :0( but I am trying to be more relaxed and it's paying off now up to 28-32 oz per day at 5.5 mths. She definetly takes more when I Am relaxed about it. But it will always be a worry when she stops at 3oz after not having fed for 4 hrs !! I try to have a break change nappy play then offer again and she usually stops after another 1-3 oz this way. Sometimes she takes 6oz in one go which is fab but usually 4 oz. So she is fed 3 hourly almost round the clock which bumps her daily intake but means no long stretches without a feed which is tiring. I have conceded that she prefers little and often and will take more as she gets older.
BTW with DD 1 (who would never ever take more than 3-4 oz) I just used to use left over milk to make up solid purees and got the milk in that way. I have since found out she was Tongue tied So is DD2! HTH
