Nearly 7month old BLW ds loving his food but...

...seems to be getting terrible wind, especially in the night (v. loud and smelly farts causing obvious discomfort sorry if TMI), and is producing several rather nasty poos per day. They are quite mucussy (sp?) but he does also have a cold so I don't know if that's the problem or if something is upsetting his tum.

Over the last week or so he's really got the hang of self feeding and much more is going in his mouth than on the floor - he's really enjoying himself, and with blw I know he should only be eating what he can cope with, but I'm getting concerned that he's eating too much and upsetting his digestion.

For example, today he's so far had half a slice of toast and half a banana for breakfast, and a home made fishcake and some sweetcorn for lunch. Last night he had a strip of pork chop (couldn't believe that he managed to tear some bits off with his 2 tiny teeth but he did and was still chewing it a good while later!), about 3 sticks of steamed carrot, some potato and cauliflower cheese. It's not all going in but a lot is, and genuinely all on his own.

He's breast fed and still having 4 breast feeds a day plus a little one after lunch (more a drink I think). He's having milk first thing, breakfast about 8, milk around 10, lunch at 12 followed by milk before his nap, milk at 4ish, dinner at 5.30 and milk before bed at 7. Should I bfeed closer to his solids? Not sure logistically how this would work though. He's waking up at least twice a night for milk too - is this because he's filling up too much on solids? He doesn't seem to be drinking significantly less milk in the day though, although he was on 2 and a half or 3 hourly feeds before weaning.

Sorry for long rant. I thought I'd be pleased when he started eating well, but it seems that it's just made me worry about something else instead

So, here we are on the weaning thread, eh?

My DD is certainly eating about the same amounts and as she is ff now I can quantify that she is taking between 20-30oz milk a day. Depending on how she feels. SO I guess your DS is doing fine.

See my thread with ++info re constipation. Any ideas?

rosietheriveter · 06/02/2010 20:13

Hi Mama - my DS will start BLW next week (at the glorious 26 week mark!) but he has a cold ATM and his farts, nappies and poos are absolutely horrendous, so you are not alone and it's not the solids! I know some who have done BLW don't recommend feeding after 4pm (assuming bed at 6/7) so you might want to try that if trouble continues once the cold is gone.

Her Momminess - the only thing that's worked for me is water, water, water. DS is FF and he occasionally has constipation problems. The worst was caused by "hungry baby" food, so he's back on the "first infant milk" stuff now and (thanks to his cold and mucus) things are moving along nicely thankyouverymuch. Or you could try the dambuster recipe from the babyledweaning forum.

Thanks rosie, I'm hoping things will settle down when the cold has gone. DO you know what the thinking is behind not feeding after 4pm? Is it to aid digestion?

HerMomminess hello there, we mustn't keep meeting like this . I'd have thought fruit and water would be your best way forward. I'm sure dried fruit is pretty guaranteed to do the trick and pear always had a shocking effect on ds1! How's your LO sleeping now? Or don't I want to ask? Are you back at work yet?

Hey ladies! Thanks for the ideas.

Ignore my plea for help (pathetic emoticon) on the thread I started! I stewed some prunes and gave it with yoghurt. Difficult to get water into her though.

I think the past 4pm thought must be in case something doesn't agree with them Otherwise stumped as to why.

Sleeping...ahem...is going much better? Am I gonna loose an online friend for saying it?? How bout you? I seriously wonder whether the ff has made a difference as she' s now totally off the breast.

All in preperation for my return to work in a month !! I' ll have to go find my brain...oh-now I remember!- it came out with the placenta!!

Updates from you mama?

mamaduckbone · 07/02/2010 17:40

HerMomminess - still blardy awful here sleep wise - there always seems to be something for me to blame though, be it another cold, teething (poor thing has awful swollen gums at the top now, I think he'll have a full mouthful of teeth before his first birthday) and now this delightful indigestion problem.

We did have a spell where it improved again, luckily, and weirdly, when we were on holiday, but we are well and truly back to square one at the moment - 11, 1, 2.30 etc etc etc.

I'll still be your friend though

Oh dear mama. Sorry to hear bout the ongoing sleep issues. Can' t remember- is DC bf? Just one DC?

Anyway, I still don' t know if now on ff has made any difference or just her. Waiting for teetg/bugs from nursery/etc to upset the applecart. But trying to enjoy sleep while it is here.

As for the full fat milk issue/weight issue- with you on that front! See my pleas on weight/running threads

Oh...and I will spare you tmi but let us say DH' s gut is back on track...O M G!!
