DS2 29w 0 Weaning not going so well - doing combo of spoon feeding and BLW

DS2 is nearly 29 weeks and he is my 3rd DC yet weaning not going all that great. Unlike my 1st 2 DC's, he has only just started solids and is still being bf. He doesn't seem keen on food and I only started because I felt "he needed to" due to his age.

I flirted with BLW with DD a couple of years ago so thought I would do the same with DS2 (but spoon feed cereal, yoghurt etc) and he is sometimes eating and sometimes just plain refusing it (both finger food and spoon fed food).

Is this "healthy"? Will he be lacking in iron? Surely at 6 1/2 months he should be having more than bf and breadsticks?

On top of that there is a LOT of near choking going on (there is no sound so gather it is NOT gagging) so my confidence in the whole process is on shaky ground.

Anyone reassure me this is nothing to worry about? You would have thought him being my 3rd I would know what I was doing.

A breastfed baby should have enough iron reserves to carry them through to 12m. With BLW the baby learns to eat whilst still getting all (or most) of their nourishment from b/f between 6&9m; the baby then increases their food intake and reduces b/f between 9&12m (thus starting to get their nourishment incl iron from food not breastmilk). I also combine BLW with some spoon-feeding (v runny foods), but I always have finger foods available for DD to nibble inbetween spoonfulls and always wait for her cue to give next spoonfull to avoid confusing BLW concept. Sorry can't help with gagging. Good luck!

Thanks LKA. I was under the impression that iron would be deficient from 6months but if it's such an issue, then phew.

My other 2 always dictated what they ate, how much and it what form (DS1 happy to be fed so spoon fed to 9months, whilst DD rejected being fed by 7months so left to self feed from then). DS2 just seems to care less at the moment.

I'll take it easy w/him.
