Hi

I am hoping someone out there has some advice for me please

My baby is coming up for 8 months old now.
I had a thread on here previously when i tried to wean her at 23 weeks..The reason I did this was she has a diary allergy & I am completly breastfeeding & dairy free & so will have to go very slowely with introducing one thing at a time... & so I started a little early.... anyway... it went horribly wrong... within a couple of hours of giving just pure baby rice with my breastmilk...she started all her previous refluxy symptoms that she had before I went dairy free- Hiccups-wet burps, arching her back & crying & crying & lots of tummy sounds. I asked you guys on here & my paedatriction & you all said her system just may not be ready.. to wait & try again....
well I did.. The second attempt was at 31weeks- so she should be well & truely ready!
I did her pear for 2 days, rice for 2 days, banana for 2 days & she LOVED IT.. whoofed it down! but ...she was so bad..in so much pain?!!!!
within a couple of hours again of her first feed I started to see her getting narky & cranky..with lots of wet burps, hiccups etc.. as the days went on it got worse & worse..she just cried & clung to me all day long.. & so after 6 days we stopped... then after no food for 2 days... she was back to my normal happy little girl??
No this reaction seems to be no matter WHAT i feed her? so its not an allergic reaction to the things im trying ( No rash, no runny poo) ..i just feel that she cannot digest solid food ??

we have seen a gastro doc.. hes baffled.. cannot understand what the problem is.. & we have one month.. to try again with yet more different foods & if she reacts this way again then they are going to admit her to see if she has somthing wrong with her tummy

So I just wanted to know has anyone had an experience like this or any advice??
My baby cannot eat food without being in agony & we just dont know why?

(She is 100% BF now & weight is fab (50th centile all the way since birth), she seems satisfied with the milk & is completly happy..as long as we dont give solids.)

Sorry- no experience but how horrible for you .

I wonder if her system might just gradually get used to it - particularly once she is moving around more?

If she hadn't reacted to the rice before then I would suggest holding off the fruit as that can be quite harsh on a delicate digestion (especially banana). Perhaps try just tiny amounts the rice for a few days to see if she's any better with just that this time round and try a bland vegetable like carrot.

Would you consider going down the BLW route - maybe giving her some steamed carrot sticks? That way she would be able to control her intake and gradually get used to larger quantities?

Banana and pear are refluxy things. I wouldn't give her any fruit at all until she was 12 months or so. I would stick to just plain baby rice and if necessary mix in some Infant Gaviscon to see if that helped. If that went down ok I'd then try bland root veg like sweet potato, butternut squash, carrot etc. I really do sympathise. My DD1 was difficult to wean - dairy and egg allergy and couldn't tolerate fruit. My DD2 is now five months and I am DREADING weaning her - I've been eating honey on toast and tuna and rice for five months now breastfeeding her because if I eat anything else her reflux is awful. God knows what she will be able to eat. Keep us posted - I'd really like to know what works. Good luck.
