Is it possible that my baby is reacting to pure organic baby rice???

Hello

i hope someone out there can help.
My DD is 23 weeks & I started to wean yesterday. I used my breast milk with the pure baby rice.. she loved it.. however a couple of hours after she had v bad hiccups & sounded all refluxie (like phlem in the throat)& was very whingy & clingy ...
I gave her rice again today & again she had hiccups & was soooo clingy.. wanted to be held all day & whinged (thats is NOT like her)...

[her history is that she is milk allergic & EBF- I am on a complete milk free diet & she is an extreemly happy baby! However, she will react if I eat prawns (or any fish) & chicken in a similar way to the way she was when i was taking in milk( just not so severe)..she goes from a smiley, happy baby who never cries.. to a grisley clingy, muscusy sounding baby (silent reflux)with lots of hiccups ]

Now is it actually possible she could be reacting to pure baby rice?????
It could just be that shes teething?? but it really does look like similar symptoms to the milk allergy???

please help... dont know what to do...

don't know the answer to this, but bumping for you.

Have you tried her on any other food?

jkb · 06/09/2009 20:17

no.. just the rice.. only started it yesterday.... it may be nothing... may be her teeth or somthing... but she is not a grisly baby atal... ONLY when she was milk intolerant... & I have not slipped up & had any milk products??

Try posting this on the allergy threads too you may get more help.

ElectricElephant · 06/09/2009 21:01

sorry, this may be a totally daft question, but have you double-checked the ingredients of the baby rice?

thisisyesterday · 06/09/2009 21:05

maybe she just isn't ready. i think it's unlikely that she is allergic to it., but it may be causing her discomfort if she is having trouble digesting it.
why not wait a week or 2 and give it another go then?

jkb · 06/09/2009 21:14

yes have checked the ingredients.. hipp organic baby rice.. just rice & vit B1.. nothing else...

I would have thought that at 23 weeks she could digest ok?? maybe I should leave for a while? but she loved it... wanted more :-)

Rice is one of the least allergenic foods there is hence its common use as an early weaning food. It sounds like she is not ready for solid food.

I would be inclined to go back to just milk which is perfectly fine for her nutritionally. Perhaps you could take her to the GP as it sounds unpleasant for her and worrying for you (I suppose you are supposed to go to the HV first but I tended not to find them terribly good on weaning info............. )

Heated · 06/09/2009 21:25

Both my dcs were uncomfortable after eating baby-rice and found butternut squash much more gentle on the tum. I did eventually realise nowhere does it say 'thou must start weaning with baby rice.'

Heated · 06/09/2009 21:26

But give her another month - she's probably not ready yet.

Sidge · 06/09/2009 21:30

She might have tummy ache. Maybe she isn't ready for solid food yet.

Also baby rice tastes like shit so maybe she was expressing her disapproval

MrsSantoslovestheBBC · 06/09/2009 21:31

Yes, baby rice mixed with milk is pretty unappealing stuff

Given OP's thoughts on her DD's sensitivity to foodstuffs it might be worth speaking to a GP first about allergies and reactions rather than trying other solid foods?

And I know many posters are clear that their babies were ready for solids before 6 months but the law of averages dictates that some will not be ready until after 6 months. In that case, why not hold off solids until you have got more info from HCPs? (but your diet sounds a bit of a pain for you to maintain )

thisisyesterday · 06/09/2009 21:33

jkb, WHO guidelines suggest that babies should be exclusively breastfed for 6 months (26 weeks), and definitely not weaned before 17 weeks (regardless of how they are fed milk)

some babies may be ready earlier, but many aren't.

ElectricElephant · 06/09/2009 21:36

I've just remembered - DD was very grumpy after baby rice - it took me ages to make the connection. Sweet potato and apple on the other hand..

what about ready brek, or something like that?

MrsSantos - i think that the advice is 'around 6 months' because all babies should be physically able by then - some babies may be ready earlier, but you have no way of knowing, so it's safer to wait until the 6 months mark.

MrsSantoslovestheBBC · 06/09/2009 21:51

ElectricElephant - this is the WHO's advice here.

FWIW I think the case for waiting till 6 months is fairly clear cut based on the most recent research. However, I also take the respectful view that other mothers see these things differently and usually don't contribute to "when to wean" convos for that reason.

In this case the OP's baby sounds really uncomfortable and thus some medical advice before trying any other solids seems a good route to take.

ElectricElephant · 06/09/2009 22:07

MrsSantos - only repeating advice i've been given on here

agreed on other medical advice though... ignore my ready brek comment - I read your OP as 25 weeks (so close enough to 6 months for it not to be an issue), 23 weeks - yes, I wait just a few more weeks and try again

Hi All

Thank you for your replies.. which i have only just read..
I gave her pear this morning...with a tiny smidge of rice to thicken (i made pear myself)... she has been a nightmare..both through the night last night ..all morning before giving the pear & even more so this afternoon.... so ratty... grissle grissle grissle... cant put her down.. its just not like her ???
so here is what I have done...
to try & rule out pain from her teeth (as she has already cut her first).. I gave 2.5mls of neurofen.... nothing... still whingy.... just to make double sure... 2 hours after I have given 2.5mls of calpol.... & now im waiting for improvment?? is I get no improvment in say 30-40 minutes.. then it cannot be her teeth right??? as with 2 doses of meds that shouldnt be making her this grumpy?...

so then..if she continues to be grisly like this.. then I will know that this is her silent reflux back & that the solids are proving too hard for her to cope with & i will stop immediatly & leave it till she is at least 26 weeks (even if I have to feed her every 2 hours!) I just want whats best for her & cant stand to see her like this when she is normally such a happy baby...

If it is the solids... what a nightmare!! she is going to be a nightmare to wean?!! its the same with my diet... as I said, she is milk allergic & so im completly diary free (BF) but she also reacts like this when I eat any fish or chicken??? what the hell am I gonna do about weaning her if she is this sensitive?!! I am very scared & confused

please help.. has anyone else out that had a baby react like this to solids?? she loves taking them... eats it fine from the spoon.. loves the flavours.. but her system may not be coping!?

my ds2 is intolerant to egg and dairy and i had to cut both from my diet completely., we[re also veggie, no no chidcken/fish etc

anyway, he weaned fine. i did wait until 26 weeks because of the fact that he clearly already had gut issues (ie, the intolerances) and i didn't want to make it worse.

we actually did BLW which meant he could avoid things that he didn't want and he w2as in control of his own intake and it worked brilliantly, he has always been a good eater, even if his diet is limited

jkb · 07/09/2009 20:09

hiya

thought i would update.. after the calpol she was slightly better.. but still not great.. i have been thinking too.. even if it were reflux then the pain refief would have probably helped with the pain ??so im not any better off!? so........ do u think i should stop the weaning.... i think so ??? & then try again in maybe 3 or 4 weeks???
feel mean tho.. cos she loved it... but maybe her tum tum didnt?!!

i would def hold off for a bit. just feed a bit more frequently, she'll be fine

people didn't used to wean until babies were around 9 months or so!

k8ty · 16/09/2009 20:53

hi, just wanted to say i have had exactly the same problem this week, my ds is 21 weeks and the last week i have introduced some food on the advice of his paed, he has silent reflux but is on meds and also sensitive to dairy so on a hypo allergenic formula, we have seen a great improvment the last 2 weeks, from screaming constantly sounding mucousy, hiccups, gulping, back arching, refusing milk, poor weight gain etc etc. to a happy baby!! but since having some food it seems to of flared right up, baby rice did it, so did pear and apple..he has been screaming and had all they sypmtoms back. like you i am so worried he will react to lots of foods now. think i will hold off for a few weeks see how we go!

jkb · 22/11/2009 19:21

im keen to know how u got on K8ty??

i have tried again.. at 31 weeks & again she was awful!

i have started another thread about it..

please let me know how u got on?

my friend's son reacted to baby rice - eventually she found out he is allergic to rice

k8ty · 05/01/2010 19:15

hi jo, sorry only just noticed this message!
how have you been doing?

ds is now 38 weeks and in the last 6 weeks he has started to tolerate alot more, we had to keep stopping and starting, its been a nightmare. he still cannot tolerate baby rice. we pushed to have tests done as he is on so much medication and nothing was working properly, we were fobbed of with the oh its reflux he will grow out of it soon.. anyway after the barium swallow test we found he has a hiatus hernia, this explains our problems with solids! he is now on a new med and i have seen a big improvment!
