Help, I'm stuck and I feel that there is no way forward for my son and I with regards to getting him on solids. We have made two attempts and on each occasion he vomited and lost lots of fluid. The last episode ended up in the A&E and we had to administer Dryolite.
I am quite scared of trying any food. Bought the Annabel Karmel book "Baby and Toddler Meal Planner", but still can't find the courage to cook something simple for my son.
My theory so far is that he definitely hates processed food and I think allergic to baby rice. Has anybody got any advice for me. It will be greatly appreciated.

Why the repeat post?

Peju · 26/05/2005 01:19

This is my first time on this site and I though I posted initially under the wrong section. Please bear with me as I am still finding my way round.

Bump

Peju, how old is he and what have you tried giving him?
How about some very simple fruit puree mixed with some of his usual milk? I always found pear or sweet apple fairly bland and easy for babies to deal with.
How is he with his milk normally?

That sounds horrible. No wonder you are feeling nervous about what to do next. My ds is 7m and has only been even vaguely interested in pureed fruit for about 10 days and now he has gone off it agan, probably as I am having to give him antibiotics at the moment. There have been a few times where he has been reluctant but I have persevered and this has ended in him spewing everywhere. I think they do know when their bodies can't deal with something at this v early stage. I am having to be v patient and remind myself that he will still get what he needs from milk so there is no rush.

How old is your son?

Flum · 26/05/2005 10:44

Gosh that must be difficult. have you tried mashed potato mixed with milk instead of baby rice.

beansprout · 26/05/2005 10:45

Is mashed potato recommended for very early weaning?

Peju · 26/05/2005 15:17

Thank you all for you replies. My baby is 24 weeks and very good with breast milk and formula. I have decided to wait a couple more weeks before trying any food. I guess when he is ready he will let me know one way or the other.

Glad you decided to wait Peju. He's obviously not ready yet.

NannyL · 26/05/2005 21:54

beansprout.... you could 'mash'potatoe with babie milk of course, but it can go very sticky and gluey so is not really the best thing

Things like carrot / swede / apple / pear / sweet potatoe / butternut squash / parsnip etc are all great for 1st tastes ut be careful to only give 1 new food every 3rd day at 1st in case of a reaction!

Dont worry.... ofcourse your baby CAN be weaned! He wont start school at 5 only drinikng milk

just take it slowly and only give him a small amount to start with. Mixing it in with normaly milk is probably a good idea!

Good luck!
