hello!
Have started giving my 6 month old (he has top and bottom teeth) purees and the odd 'chunk' of vegetable in his hand. He loves the finger food but is stuffing loads in his mouth and biting down and I'm so scared his going to bite a huge lump off and choke.
What can I do?
Am really feeling out of my depth!
Any advice/ reassurance so gratefully received!
Bx

have you had a wee look at www.babyledweaning.com, there are lots of pics of babies at 6 months not choking, iykwim? i don't think tbh that teeth make that much difference, dd bites off ginormous chunks just by breaking them off but always spits them out if they're too much.
what do you know about infant resus? i seriously always recommend that every parent learns a bit about what to do. babies don't actually choke hardly at all, but your child could be aged five and choking on a sweetie and you'll think why the HELL didn't i find out what to do in advance?

He will be fine-have you read Baby-Led-Weaning? Loads of great adicve there. There is a difference between real choking and gagging but at this age so long as he is in control of what he puts into his mouth and you don't disctract him when he is eating then the chances of him choking a greatly reduced-teeth or no teeth. I've done the same with my DS who os 8mths now and he has never choked.

Thank you!
A fellow mnetter recommended your website a couple of days ago Aitch - really inspiring!! What happy babies too I think Ive just got myself in a bit of a flap beacuse I've only seen babies gumming/ sucking bits of food but not with teeth so worried there would be a greater risk. he has a milk allergy too (which is a separate issue) and we've had a few scary moments (accidentally gave him a puree with milk in arghhh)

Anyway really appreciate the advice! Will go and study the website!!

och, don't study it, that sounds like a bore. but the photos are nice and comforting (and deeesgusting). it is extraordinary how many jars have milk in them, isn't it? milk in ratatouille, fgs? you just have to be a label demon, i think. my pal wrote a thing on allergies for me, by the way, you could have a wee look at that.

funny about the teeth though, isn't it? you're worrying that he's got too many to eat finger food, other people worry that it's impossibe because their kids don't have any. can't win.
